Matthew McConaughey and Camila Alves reportedly met in 2006, went public as a couple in 2007, and married in Austin on June 9, 2012. Their first two children arrived before the wedding; their third was born later that year.

Matthew McConaughey and Camila Alves’ relationship timeline

  • 2006 — Reported first meeting: McConaughey and Alves met at a Los Angeles nightclub, according to The Guardian and Us Weekly. Recalling the encounter in a January 2017 interview with Howard Stern, McConaughey said, “That night I spoke 25 minutes of the best Spanish I’ve ever spoken in my life”; Alves speaks Portuguese, not Spanish, as Us Weekly noted.
  • 2007 — Relationship becomes public: CBS News reported that the pair went public that year, distinguishing that milestone from their reported 2006 meeting. CBS News
  • July 2008 — First child: Their son Levi was born, according to Us Weekly’s timeline.
  • January 2010 — Second child: Their daughter Vida was born. McConaughey announced her name and explained that it means “life” in Portuguese, Us Weekly reported.
  • December 25, 2011 — Engagement: McConaughey announced his proposal on Christmas Day. CBS News reproduced his post: “Just asked Camila to marry me, #MerryChistmas”. CBS News
  • June 9, 2012 — Wedding: The couple married at their home in Austin in a private ceremony with family, friends, and their two children present. CBS News
  • December 28, 2012 — Third child: Their son Livingston was born, Us Weekly’s timeline reports. A 2017 Guardian profile also identifies Levi, Vida, and Livingston as the couple’s children.

Why accounts give different years for their first meeting

Most of the sources cited here place McConaughey and Alves’ first meeting in 2006. A June 2012 Los Angeles Times wedding report, however, says they met in 2007. The sources do not explain the discrepancy. CBS News separately uses 2007 for the point when their relationship became public, so the clearest account is to describe 2006 as the best-supported reported meeting year and 2007 as the public relationship milestone.
