Their responses arrived as search and rescue efforts continued across the region.
What happened in Central Texas
The flooding event began July 2, 2025, according to the Texas governor’s July 22 disaster proclamation. On July 7, the Texas Division of Emergency Management (TDEM) said heavy rain and flooding were continuing to affect parts of the state and warned of further flood risk in Central Texas, the Hill Country, Big Country and Concho Valley.
The toll was still changing as the reactions were reported. TheWrap’s July 8 roundup said 109 people had died and 161 remained missing at the time of publication; those were a dated snapshot, not a final count. The San Antonio Express-News published an earlier snapshot on July 7. The official sources cited here do not establish a final victim count.
What Matthew McConaughey said
McConaughey posted on X on Sunday, July 6, according to the San Antonio Express-News. He expressed grief, encouraged people who could to help, and emphasized the need to support Texans through a long recovery. In a passage quoted by TheWrap on July 8, he wrote that “the shock, the pain, and the chaos need the steady hand of a neighbor.”

In its July 7 update, TDEM described state response deployments and directed Texans to disaster.texas.gov for flood resources, safety tips and recovery assistance. Governor Greg Abbott’s warning in that update was specific to the conditions then: “There is still a threat of heavy rain with the potential to cause flooding in the Central Texas, Hill Country, Big Country, and Concho Valley regions.” TDEM also urged residents to follow local officials and remember “Turn Around, Don’t Drown.” These are historical instructions from July 2025; anyone facing an emergency now should check current official alerts.
