Photographer Brendon O’Neal sued actor Michael Richards in 2010, alleging Richards punched and kicked him during an encounter on a Los Angeles street. Contemporary reports describe the filing and its claims, but the sources available here do not establish how the lawsuit ended.
What did the lawsuit allege?
Courthouse News Service reported on September 14, 2010, that O’Neal sued Richards in Santa Monica Superior Court over an incident dated August 25, 2010. According to the complaint as described in the report, Richards punched O’Neal, knocked him down and kicked him. Courthouse News Service’s report describes allegations in a complaint, not findings by a court.
A September 11 report by TMZ gave more detail about the claims: it said the complaint alleged that Richards punched O’Neal in the face, knocked him to the ground and repeatedly kicked him, including blows aimed at O’Neal’s arms, hands and camera. TMZ reported that O’Neal claimed mental, physical and nervous pain, and sought medical expenses and unspecified damages. The report did not give a dollar amount or explain what prompted the alleged encounter. TMZ’s report on the complaint
Did photographs establish what happened?
In a September 13 follow-up, TMZ published photographs that O’Neal had released. The outlet described Richards as appearing to smile and hold keys in the images, while noting that it did not know what happened between the shots. The pictures, as reported, therefore do not establish what occurred during the alleged encounter. TMZ’s follow-up on the photographs
