In footage described in reports about the documentary In Whose Name?, West acknowledged Che’s point. Che later said West apologized when they met again at SNL in 2019.
What happened after Kanye West’s 2018 SNL appearance?
West was the musical guest on the September 29, 2018, episode of Saturday Night Live, hosted by Adam Driver. At the end of the broadcast, he delivered an unplanned speech supporting Donald Trump while wearing a Make America Great Again cap. A transcript of the following month’s Weekend Update described the speech as unplanned; Pete Davidson said the cast had to stand behind West and called the moment awkward. Read the transcript.
The backstage confrontation, later described in reports about the documentary In Whose Name?, focused on West’s comments about Black comedians discussing Black subject matter, including Bill Cosby. TV Insider’s account says West told Che he had meant Leslie Jones. Che explained that he thought West was referring to him because he had made a joke about Cosby.
Why did Michael Che confront West?
Che’s objection was that West had called out him and the cast in front of an audience without letting them answer. As quoted in TV Insider’s description of the documentary footage, Che asked, “Why you gotta call me out on the f***in’ [stage] if I don’t got a chance to say anything for myself?” He also said, “I’m the Black comedian that made a joke about Cosby.”

West replied that he loved Che. Che said he loved West too, but argued that criticizing them without allowing a response was unfair. West answered, “Yeah, you right about that.” TV Insider’s account of the footage reproduces these exchanges; the quotations are reported dialogue, not a verified full transcript of the film.

Che later said that West approached him at SNL in December 2019, when Eddie Murphy hosted, and told him, “I owe you an apology.” Che recalled that they talked and that he “never brought it up again.” The Daily Beast and TheWrap reported Che’s account of the interview on September 25, 2025. Both reports concern the same interview, so they support that Che told the story; they are not independent confirmation of the private apology. The Daily Beast’s report · TheWrap’s report.
