Jhay Cortez and Jhayco are two names for the same Puerto Rican artist: Jesús Manuel Nieves Cortés, a songwriter, composer, producer and performer whose work moved from behind the scenes to the center of Latin music. He helped build his reputation through songwriting and production before “No Me Conoce” and collaborations such as “Dákiti” made him widely recognizable as a performer. His 2024 album Le Clique: Vida Rockstar (X) shows another side of that career: an artist shaping a full-length project around his own creative identity.
Who is Jhay Cortez?
Universal Music Latino identifies him as Jesús Manuel Nieves Cortés, born in Puerto Rico and raised in part in New Jersey. Jhay Cortez was the name under which he became known; he later began releasing music as Jhayco. The shift in name accompanied a broadening of his public identity, but the work spans the same connected roles: writing, composing, producing and performing.
His early development is described in slightly different ways by the sources. Universal Music Latino says he began producing and composing at 14 and worked as a composer and producer on Tito el Bambino’s Invencible at 16. People CHICA reports that he learned production at 14, began recording himself two years later and started writing songs as a child. In a 2021 interview with GRAMMY.com, Jhay said he began songwriting at 17 to earn money and make connections. These accounts point to early musical activity, followed by paid songwriting, rather than one definitive age at which every part of his career began. Universal Music Latino’s biography, People CHICA’s profile and GRAMMY.com’s interview describe those early steps.
What songs did Jhay Cortez write?
His early credits connect him to records by established artists, though composing or songwriting should not be confused with performing every song or producing every part of it. Universal Music Latino says he worked alongside artists including Zion y Lennox, Natti Natasha and Nicky Jam, and composed four songs on J Balvin’s Vibras. People CHICA also identifies songwriting credits on work associated with Zion y Lennox, Tito el Bambino, Cardi B’s “I Like It” and Natti Natasha’s “Criminal.”

Universal Music Latino says “I Like It” received ASCAP Song of the Year recognition and also names “Criminal” and “No Es Justo” among award-recognized songs. These are examples of his work as a songwriter and composer, not a complete credit list. For a song’s precise division of writing, composition and production, consult its official track credits. Universal Music Latino and People CHICA provide the named examples.
How did “No Me Conoce” bring him to a wider audience?
“No Me Conoce” became a defining release of the Famouz era. Universal Music Latino identifies the original song and its remix, featuring J Balvin and Bad Bunny, as pivotal to his rise. The Los Angeles Times describes the song as the third single from his debut album and says the remix helped introduce Jhayco to a global audience.

The numbers attached to that success are historical snapshots, not current totals. People CHICA reported in July 2019 that the remix had spent eight weeks on Billboard’s Hot Latin Songs chart and peaked at No. 8. In an Oct. 1, 2024 profile, the Los Angeles Times reported more than 1.4 billion Spotify streams for “No Me Conoce.” Neither figure should be read as a live chart position or an up-to-date streaming count. People CHICA and the Los Angeles Times provide the dated figures.
On Famouz, Universal Music Latino says Jhay wrote the album in full and also participated as executive producer. The combination illustrates the transition at the heart of his career: the songwriter and producer could also step forward as the voice and face of his own music.

Why is “Dákiti” an important collaboration?
“Dákiti,” credited to Bad Bunny featuring Jhay Cortez, marked another major moment in Jhayco’s career as a performer. GRAMMY.com reported that it debuted at No. 1 on Hot Latin Songs and entered the Top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100. Those are the chart results reported in the outlet’s 2021 coverage, not a statement about the song’s present chart status. That same year, the publication discussed the track in connection with a Latin Grammy nomination and the artists’ Grammy Awards performance. GRAMMY.com’s 2021 interview places the song in that period’s context.
His collaborations continued across different creative roles. GRAMMY.com describes his work with producers Tainy, MVSIS and Taiko on Timelezz, and highlights his own production on “En Mi Cuarto,” featuring Skrillex. The examples show a career that cannot be reduced to a list of songs he wrote for other performers: collaboration, production and lead performance all sit alongside songwriting.

What makes Le Clique: Vida Rockstar (X) a different kind of project?
Released in 2024, Le Clique: Vida Rockstar (X) was described by EL PAÍS as a 29-song project and Jhayco’s first production under that name rather than Jhay Cortez. The Los Angeles Times also describes it as a 29-track, three-part album. Its sections give the project a self-portrait-like structure: “Le Clique” centers on family, “Vida Rockstar” evokes his rock-star phase, and “X” gathers songs he regards as hits. The album arrived three years after his previous studio album, according to EL PAÍS. EL PAÍS and the Los Angeles Times describe its structure and release-era framing.
Its sound is similarly varied, rather than an album-length turn to rock. The Los Angeles Times points to Mexican music guitar textures on “Ex-Special” with Peso Pluma, deep house on “En La Bentley,” Jersey club on “58,” and a pop-punk experiment in “Vida Rockstar.” EL PAÍS names collaborators including Quevedo, Eladio Carrión, Peso Pluma, Yandel and DJ Khaled, and describes Jhayco blending dembow and afrobeats with other styles.

For Jhayco, the album’s organizing idea was personal expression rather than simply assembling high-profile guest appearances. Speaking to the Los Angeles Times about the September 2024 release, he said: “I could have done a record with another big artist just to get the numbers, like with [Bad] Bunny. But it’s not about that. It’s expressing what the artist is going through with the album and how I want it to be, not how people want it to be.” His account helps explain why the project is presented as a deliberate creative statement as well as a collection of songs.
How to understand Jhay Cortez’s career
His story is not simply a change from songwriter to singer. The through-line is a widening of the same craft: early composing and production for other artists, a solo breakthrough built around “No Me Conoce,” high-profile collaborations such as “Dákiti,” and later albums designed to express a more defined artistic point of view. Jhayco’s 2024 project makes that evolution visible in its structure and genre range, while his earlier credits explain how he built a place in the music before his own name became the headline.
