Matty Acton, a B105 Brisbane breakfast radio host, became a grandfather at 37. He confirmed the news in a 2024 interview with Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, naming his granddaughter Illyria Fay Acton and saying his son was 22 at the time.
How Matty Acton announced he was a grandfather
The announcement came during a B105 Brisbane breakfast interview with Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese. In the published transcript dated 3 October 2024, co-host Abby Coleman introduced the news by asking, “Did you know that he’s become a grandfather?” Acton confirmed it and, when asked whether the baby was a boy or a girl, replied: “Little girl. Illyria Fay Acton.” He also said his son was 22.
The Prime Minister of Australia’s transcript of the interview is the primary record of that exchange. PerthNow reported the announcement the day before, on 2 October 2024, and quoted an Instagram caption welcoming Illyria Fay Acton to the family. Neither source establishes an exact birth time.
Why the headline says he became a grandpa at 37
PerthNow reported Acton’s age at the time he became a grandfather as 37. That is an age-at-the-event figure; it should not be confused with ages mentioned in later coverage, which refer to Acton when those pieces appeared. The interview transcript’s separate, contemporaneous detail is that his son was 22.

Becoming a grandfather in his thirties is the personal circumstance behind the story, not evidence of a broader trend. The sources cited here do not establish population statistics about young grandparents.

In a first-person SBS feature published on 10 September 2026, the couple reflected on being grandparents while their other children were still at school, including feelings of guilt and the different roles within their family.
