What Matthew Perry’s Autopsy Says—and Doesn’t Say—About Efforts to Save Him

Matthew Perry’s autopsy determined that acute ketamine effects caused his death, with drowning, coronary artery disease, and buprenorphine effects as contributing factors. It does not document a rescue attempt before paramedics arrived.

Matthew Perry’s autopsy does not establish that anyone tried to resuscitate him before paramedics arrived. The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s public release says he was found unresponsive in his pool, that 911 was called, and that paramedics responded and pronounced him dead. That record does not rule out an earlier attempt to help; it simply does not document one.

What the official record says about the response

The Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner reported that Perry was found unresponsive in the pool at his residence at approximately 1600 hours on October 28, 2023. The county’s December 15, 2023 release says 911 was called, paramedics responded, and death was pronounced. It does not mention CPR, other first aid, or a rescue effort before paramedics arrived. Read the Medical Examiner’s release.

The autopsy report summary and investigator narrative reviewed for this account also do not substantiate a pre-arrival rescue attempt. That is a limit of what these records document, not proof that nobody tried to help. The specific claim that an effort was made before paramedics arrived would require a direct source identifying who acted, what they did, and when; it should not be presented as an autopsy finding on the basis of these records.

What the autopsy found about cause of death

The Medical Examiner determined that the cause of death was “the acute effects of ketamine” and classified the manner of death as an accident. The report listed drowning, coronary artery disease, and buprenorphine effects as contributing factors. The county’s cause-of-death announcement and the autopsy report distinguish the primary cause from those additional factors.

How the contributing factors fit together

  • Drowning: The report said drowning contributed because Perry was likely submerged after losing consciousness.
  • Coronary artery disease: It contributed by exacerbating ketamine-induced myocardial effects, according to the report.
  • Buprenorphine effects: The report considered these contributory because of additive respiratory effects at high ketamine levels.

The report also said there was no fatal blunt or penetrating trauma and that foul play was not suspected.

What the report says about ketamine

The Medical Examiner measured ketamine at 3,540 ng/ml in peripheral blood and 3,271 ng/ml in central blood. The report compared those results with a typical range of 1,000–6,000 ng/ml for general anesthesia in monitored surgical-anesthesiologic care. That comparison is the report’s, not a universal range independently established here. The report said high ketamine levels could cause cardiovascular overstimulation and respiratory depression. The autopsy report provides the measurements and interpretation.

Why the last known infusion did not explain the levels

The report says Perry’s last known ketamine infusion was about one and a half weeks before his death and could not account for the ketamine found at death. It gives ketamine’s half-life as three to four hours or less. The exact intake method in Perry’s case is unknown, according to the report. See the report’s discussion of ketamine.

What can be concluded about a rescue attempt

The official material establishes the sequence it records: Perry was found unresponsive, 911 was called, and paramedics responded and pronounced him dead. It does not establish whether anyone attempted CPR or another intervention before their arrival. Accordingly, the autopsy supports the medical findings about cause and contributing factors, but not the specific claim that someone tried to save Perry before paramedics arrived.
