The tension surfaced early. Nine’s Episode 17 recap recounts Ash’s frustration with the relationship’s intensity, including a breakdown in a cow paddock and a dinner that was interrupted. At the ceremony, Madeleine said she wanted to leave even as she insisted she had come to find love. Ash argued, “I’m not here for potatoes at a Dinner Party, I’m here to find love.”
Madeleine framed her decision in terms of the unusual pull she felt toward the experiment, saying, “Life is weird and the universe pulls us to do things.” The recap records her “leave” vote and Ash’s “stay” vote; the experts kept them in for another week.

How the relationship began on the show
Madeleine and Ash were a late-entering couple in Season 11. Nine’s Episode 14 wedding recap says Madeleine was 30 at the time and introduced herself as a medium, describing herself as “deep and weird and strange.” She told Ash “I love you” at the aisle. She also said she initially felt “bad vibes,” which eased after Ash mentioned that he thought his home might be haunted. These details reflect how Madeleine presented herself on the show, not independent verification of psychic abilities.
What Ash said about their exit
In Nine’s exit interview, Ash said he had sensed “something wasn’t right” on the honeymoon and described the marriage as “strange.” He also said he was glad he had tried the experiment. Those comments are Ash’s retrospective account of their on-screen relationship, rather than evidence about what happened between them after filming.
