But its weekly law-enforcement machinery risks reducing the family history and regional conflicts that gave the original its identity to familiar procedural beats. The result is a spinoff whose promise is clearer than its distinction—though its mournful mood may yet give it room to grow.
What is Marshals about?
Marshals continues Kayce Dutton’s story after the Yellowstone Ranch. Paramount’s official description says he joins an elite U.S. Marshals unit, bringing his cowboy and Navy SEAL experience to law enforcement in Montana. His squad includes Pete Calvin, Belle Skinner, Andrea Cruz and Miles Kittle; the series also keeps Kayce’s family and Broken Rock relationships in view, including his son Tate and confidantes Mo and Thomas Rainwater. The credited cast includes Grimes, Logan Marshall-Green, Arielle Kebbel, Ash Santos, Tatanka Means, Brecken Merrill, Mo Brings Plenty and Gil Birmingham. Paramount’s series description and press materials frame the central tension as balancing the psychological cost of the work with family obligations.
CBS premiered the series on March 1, 2026. Its current listing identifies two seasons, and Paramount’s press page says season two premiered October 4, 2026. CBS’s current series page describes Kayce as trying to make a stable home life while violence continues around him. These are continuation-story ingredients, but the central question is whether the show uses them to deepen Kayce—or mainly to link one weekly case to the next.
Why does the spinoff feel less distinctive than Yellowstone?
The sharpest criticism is structural. Yellowstone was built around a sprawling, serialized family saga; Marshals places Kayce inside a law-enforcement format that can resolve conflicts episode by episode. That shift makes the show easier to enter as a standalone procedural, but it also risks flattening the tangled loyalties, sustained consequences and particular voice that made the earlier series feel like more than a standard crime drama.

In his February 27, 2026 review for The Daily Beast, entertainment critic Nick Schager called the series a “standard-issue CBS procedural,” criticizing its familiar dialogue-and-action balance, thin characterization and predictable resolutions. His account of the premiere describes Kayce raising Tate after Monica’s death, a mine dispute and conflict involving Broken Rock escalating, and Kayce being recruited to Pete Calvin’s squad. That is Schager’s description of the episode and his critical reading of its setup—not independent reporting on mining or Indigenous affairs. His concern is that specific family and community stakes become fuel for a familiar case-of-the-week engine.
TV Insider critic Matt Roush likewise noted weekly shootouts and action, along with a muted central character. But he saw a possible counterweight: a mournful view of a vanishing wilderness that could distinguish the show from a generic network procedural. Roush rated it 2.5 stars and called it a “work-in-progress” in his February 27 review. That possibility matters. A quieter, grieving Kayce may not reproduce Yellowstone’s intensity, but it could become a companion piece if the series gives that grief and his search for purpose space to develop.

Can Luke Grimes carry Kayce’s new chapter?
Grimes is the bridge between the two shows, and Kayce’s restrained nature is both an asset and a writing challenge. A character who holds much of himself back can support a reflective story, but the show has to make that interior life legible through choices, relationships and consequences. If action becomes the main weekly resolution while Kayce remains muted, the character risks feeling like a familiar franchise face placed inside an interchangeable procedural.
Grimes has acknowledged that the continuation was not inevitable from his perspective. In an Associated Press interview published February 25, 2026, he said he had thought Kayce’s ending in Yellowstone was complete because the character had obtained the simple life he wanted. He described the new series’ aim this way: “We wanted to make it feel organic and we wanted there to be enough of the sort of ethos of ‘Yellowstone’ in there that the original fans could have something to hold on to getting into the show, but then have it have somewhere to go that felt like its own thing.” That intention explains the balancing act; it cannot, by itself, settle whether the show achieves it. The Associated Press interview with Grimes is useful context for the creative ambition, not proof of the result.

Do the Montana and Broken Rock conflicts feel specific?
The series retains Broken Rock relationships and conflicts alongside its law-enforcement stories, which gives it a chance to preserve the social and family texture of the franchise. But using a mine dispute or a reservation-related conflict as a case’s trigger is not the same as giving those issues depth. Schager’s account of the premiere raises a legitimate craft question: do these tensions shape the characters and carry forward, or do they function mainly as stakes for the marshal squad’s next confrontation?
The available criticism points to a risk rather than proving that every episode handles the material in the same way. A strong continuation would let Montana’s conflicts affect Kayce’s decisions and relationships beyond the immediate procedural resolution. If they are introduced chiefly to set up action, the setting may feel like scenery for a familiar formula rather than a source of distinctive storytelling.

What critics and viewers say so far
As of October 8, 2026, Rotten Tomatoes listed season one at 48% on the Tomatometer from 21 critic reviews and 28% on the Popcornmeter from 500+ audience ratings. Those are dynamic figures and can change. The site’s critics consensus says: “Marshals confines Kayce Dutton within a dim procedural that lacks the narrative spark and intrigue that Yellowstone managed instantly, making this one ham-fisted trek.” Rotten Tomatoes’ season-one page records the scores and consensus.
The negative case is that familiar procedural rhythms leave too little room for Yellowstone’s more distinctive tone, dialogue and serialized family conflict. The counterargument, represented by Roush’s review, is that the show’s mournful atmosphere and Kayce’s search for a new purpose could establish a quieter identity over time. The disagreement is partly about what a viewer wants: someone looking for a self-contained weekly law-enforcement story may appreciate traits that a fan expecting another sprawling Dutton saga sees as generic.
