What happened to Martha Moxley?
Martha Moxley, 15, was killed in Greenwich, Connecticut, in 1975. In its 2006 opinion in State v. Skakel, the Connecticut Supreme Court said Moxley was found bludgeoned to death on October 31 in a wooded area near her family home. Michael Skakel was also 15 at the time.
What is new about the Skakel case?
The current development is a podcast announcement, not a new court ruling. NBC News Studios announced Dead Certain: The Martha Moxley Murder on October 28, 2025, describing it as a 12-episode series hosted by Andrew Goldman and setting November 4, 2025, as its premiere date. How did Michael Skakel’s conviction change?
Skakel was arrested and charged 25 years after Moxley’s killing. A jury convicted him in 2002, and the Connecticut Supreme Court affirmed that judgment in 2006. That was not the final procedural outcome.

The later stages are summarized in CBS News’ case timeline. A vacated conviction is no longer operative, but vacatur is not, by itself, a judicial finding that Skakel was factually innocent.

What does the state’s decision not to retry Skakel mean?
In 2020, prosecutors announced that they would not retry Skakel. That was a decision about whether to pursue another prosecution; it was not a verdict identifying Moxley’s killer or a court determination resolving the case on the facts. The distinction matters: the jury’s 2002 conviction, the appellate rulings that followed, and the state’s decision not to retry were separate actions taken at different points in the process.
