In November 2023, People reported that Matt Lauer had changed his social circle and was living a much quieter life, citing an unnamed source. That account was not an independently verified portrait of his private relationships—and later coverage said he was reconnecting with friends by 2024. The headline describes a report about a particular period, not a confirmed account of Lauer’s life today.
What the 2023 report said
People published its report on November 30, 2023, six years after NBC fired Lauer from Today. In a summary carried by Yahoo, an unnamed source described the former anchor’s lifestyle as “very quiet” and “nothing at all like what it was” before his firing over allegations of sexual misconduct. The headline characterized the change as a drastic shift in his social circle.
The claim is attributed to an anonymous source, not to a named friend or to Lauer. Yahoo’s accessible republication provides the headline and a short summary, rather than the full People article. It therefore does not establish who was included in Lauer’s circle, how many relationships had changed, or the details behind the source’s description. Read Yahoo’s republication of the report.
What later coverage added
A 2025 retrospective by TV Insider recapped the 2023 account, saying a People source had described Lauer as having iced out many old friends, including some who supported him after Today. The retrospective also said a separate People update in November 2024 reported that he was reconnecting with friends. That later account complicates any suggestion that the 2023 description remained true indefinitely; it does not reveal the full state of his private relationships. TV Insider’s retrospective.

There was also a public reunion: a January 2024 South China Morning Post retrospective reported that Lauer met former NBC colleagues at a New York wedding. A public appearance with former coworkers can coexist with a report about changes in someone’s broader private circle. It neither confirms nor disproves the anonymous-source claims. NBC fired Lauer from Today in 2017 after receiving a complaint about inappropriate sexual behavior in the workplace, according to TV Insider’s retrospective. The employment action and the allegations should not be confused with a criminal conviction. The same retrospective says Lauer disputed some accounts while acknowledging enough truth in the stories to feel embarrassed and ashamed, and denied the rape allegation described in Ronan Farrow’s book. These are separate, attributed accounts; they do not establish a criminal judgment.
