Five under-discussed villains, at a glance
The debut details and character descriptions below are reported by Shawn Lealos in ComicBook.com’s July 4, 2026 feature on 1960s X-Men villains. The distinction between a first appearance and a full appearance matters for Sauron.
| Villain | Reported debut | Signature hook |
|---|---|---|
| Vanisher | The X-Men #2 (1963) | Teleportation used to build a criminal organization |
| Unus the Untouchable | The X-Men #8 (1964) | A force field that can become dangerous when amplified |
| Mastermind (Jason Wyngarde) | The X-Men #4 (1964) | Illusions that affect multiple senses |
| Mesmero | The X-Men #49 (1968) | Hypnosis and a “psyche-generator” device |
| Sauron (Dr. Karl Lykos) | First appearance: The X-Men #59; full appearance as Sauron: #60 (both 1969) | Energy-draining transformation into a humanoid pteranodon |
Lealos’s feature supplies the issue and year anchors and the character-specific descriptions in this table. These are a useful discovery list, not a ranking: no source establishes which character is “most forgotten.”
Why these five merit another look
Vanisher
Teleporation gave this early opponent a practical criminal advantage: the ComicBook.com account says he used it to build an organization. The same account characterizes his initial defeat as easy and notes that he then went several years without appearing. That combination—a striking ability, an early loss and a long gap—helps explain why he may be less prominent in casual recollections than more persistent X-Men foes.

Unus the Untouchable
Angelo Unuscione’s force field is more interesting than a simple defense. Lealos describes it as potentially dangerous when amplified, making the ability itself a source of risk as well as protection. That limitation gives the character a clear story hook beyond the basic idea of being difficult to hit.
Mastermind
Jason Wyngarde’s sensory illusions make him a threat through perception rather than brute force. The feature connects him to both the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants and the Hellfire Club, as well as the Dark Phoenix story. Those later associations make him a useful example of how an early villain could remain relevant across different X-Men eras; they do not mean he alone accounts for the Phoenix storyline.

Mesmero
Mesmero combines mutant hypnosis with a device called the “psyche-generator.” Lealos notes that his debut also introduced Polaris, and suggests that the new character may have drawn attention away from him. The feature reports that Mesmero appeared again in the late 1960s and 1970s, giving readers more than a one-issue curiosity to revisit.
Sauron
Dr. Karl Lykos’s story ties him to the Savage Land adventures of the X-Men. As described by Lealos, Lykos drains mutant life energy and transforms into a humanoid pteranodon. The reported publication history separates his initial appearance in The X-Men #59 from his full appearance as Sauron in #60, both in 1969; treating those as the same milestone would blur an important distinction.

“Forgotten” needs a fair comparison
Marvel’s official “Best of the Worst: Marvel Villains” reading list offers useful context by identifying landmark appearances for Doctor Doom, Kang the Conqueror, and Galactus. Doom’s first appearance is listed in Fantastic Four #5, Kang’s introduction in Avengers #8, and Galactus and the Silver Surfer’s first appearance in Fantastic Four #48. Those famous names are foils, not proof that every villain outside the list is obscure.
Marvel’s Silver Age guide search result broadly describes the decade as the first generation of modern Marvel comics, but the page itself was not accessible for fuller verification. It is safest to use “Silver Age” as period framing, not as support for a more specific claim about the characters’ legacy.

Where to start reading
For the most direct route, begin with the cited debut issues and follow the characters into the later stories mentioned above. Marvel’s official page for Avengers (1963) #6 confirms that issue’s July 1, 1964 publication date and identifies it as the first full appearance of the original Baron Zemo. It also lists Marvel Masterworks: The Avengers Vol. 8 among related hardcovers. That makes the volume a possible route into classic Avengers comics, but the listing does not establish that it collects the five X-Men stories discussed here.
