Mary discovered she could pull out the closet door’s hinge pins. Once they freed themselves, they called authorities; police arrested their abductor, Ming Sen Shiue, within two hours of Mary’s call.
How Mary and Elizabeth escaped
The Minnesota Supreme Court’s 1982 account says Mary found she could remove the closet door’s hinge pins. She and Elizabeth freed themselves, called authorities and escaped on July 7, 1980. The court’s account establishes the hinge pins as the means of escape; it does not describe a more elaborate plan.
A contemporaneous Washington Post report published July 8, 1980 says police arrested Shiue at his Minneapolis stereo and television repair shop within two hours of Mary’s call.
Why Shiue targeted Mary
Shiue had been Mary’s student in ninth-grade math. In the account reviewed by the Eighth Circuit, he said he resented a grade and what he characterized as a lack of encouragement. Those were Shiue’s stated grievances, not an objective explanation or justification for the crime.

The abduction and seven-week captivity
On May 16, 1980, Shiue abducted Mary and Elizabeth from a beauty salon parking lot in Roseville. According to the Minnesota Supreme Court’s December 3, 1982 opinion, he directed Mary to drive to a secluded place, bound and gagged the two, and put them in the trunk of a car.
Six-year-old Jason Wilkman approached the vehicle. Shiue grabbed him and put him in the trunk as well; the court record says the three were there for about an hour. Shiue drove Mary and Elizabeth to his Roseville home, where he kept them for about seven weeks, primarily in a closet. The Eighth Circuit’s June 5, 1981 opinion describes the prolonged captivity, sexual assaults against Mary, threats against Elizabeth and Shiue’s attempts to make Mary’s disappearance seem voluntary.

Jason Wilkman and the court outcomes
Jason was killed after Shiue took him from the car. The Minnesota Supreme Court affirmed Shiue’s convictions for kidnapping and second-degree murder, as well as a 40-year state sentence ordered to run concurrently with his federal sentence. Separately, the Eighth Circuit affirmed his federal kidnapping conviction and life sentence. The state and federal sentences were distinct; the state term was concurrent with the federal one.
