Marvel’s March 26, 2025 announcement named 27 performers for Avengers: Doomsday, bringing together MCU characters, the Fantastic Four and actors from Fox’s X-Men films. Robert Downey Jr. was not a new reveal in that announcement: Marvel had already announced his return in 2024 as Victor von Doom, also known as Doctor Doom. The cast list does not confirm which characters will oppose him—or their allegiances in the story.

How the cast connects across Marvel franchises
Returning MCU performers
The roster includes performers associated with the Marvel Cinematic Universe, among them Chris Hemsworth, Anthony Mackie, Sebastian Stan, Letitia Wright, Paul Rudd, Simu Liu, Florence Pugh and Tom Hiddleston. The announcement gives names, but it does not provide a scene-by-scene account of who works with whom.

The Fantastic Four
Vanessa Kirby, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Joseph Quinn and Pedro Pascal connect the cast to Marvel’s Fantastic Four. Their presence brings that team into the announced ensemble; it does not, on its own, establish the group’s role in the conflict with Doom.
Fox-era X-Men performers
Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Kelsey Grammer, Rebecca Romijn, James Marsden and Alan Cumming are performers associated with the Fox-era X-Men films. Their inclusion signals a reunion of familiar franchise faces, but the cast announcement does not confirm the characters’ precise affiliations in Doomsday. The Associated Press’ contemporaneous coverage also discusses the franchise groupings.

Other announced Marvel characters
Wyatt Russell, Tenoch Huerta Mejia, Lewis Pullman, Danny Ramirez, David Harbour, Winston Duke, Hannah John-Kamen and Channing Tatum add further Marvel characters and connections to the ensemble. Being named in the announcement confirms their inclusion in the announced cast; it does not settle whether each character will fight Doom, support him or pursue another goal.
Is Robert Downey Jr. playing Iron Man or Doctor Doom?
Marvel announced Downey’s return at San Diego Comic-Con in 2024 as Victor von Doom, not Tony Stark/Iron Man. Disney’s current US film page labels the role “Victor von Doom/Doctor Doom.” The 2025 cast announcement referred back to that earlier reveal rather than introducing Downey as a newly announced cast member. That distinction matters when describing the ensemble: the announcement named performers in the film, but it did not establish that every one of them is an “Avenger” or that they will all unite against Doom. The title’s suggestion of a confrontation is not a substitute for a confirmed plot or allegiance.
Was the March 2025 roster the final cast?
No. It was a dated announcement roster, not a definitive statement that no other performers would appear. Disney later said, “There’s always room for more…” and subsequent official publicity expanded the public cast listing. Disney’s announcement livestream follow-up and Disney UK’s later publicity
