The MaXXXine trailer introduces Mia Goth as Maxine Minx, an aspiring mainstream actress trying to make it in 1980s Hollywood. Its references to the Night Stalker draw on the era’s real fear, but director Ti West has said the film is not a Richard Ramirez story. Released after X and the prequel Pearl, MaXXXine is the concluding chapter of the trilogy as released.
What the MaXXXine trailer is about
Set in 1985, according to TheWrap’s report on the first trailer, the film follows Maxine as she tries to move from adult-film work into mainstream movies. She has survived the events of X and now has a chance to pursue a larger screen career. The official A24 synopsis describes her as an adult-film star and aspiring actress who finally gets her big break while a mysterious killer stalks Hollywood starlets.
Maxine’s opportunity in Hollywood
The opportunity at the center of the story is a lead role in The Puritan II, a fictional slasher sequel, as described in the British Film Institute’s interview with West. That movie-within-the-movie gives Maxine a path toward mainstream stardom while placing her inside a Hollywood horror story of its own.
The people around Maxine
The official cast includes Goth, Elizabeth Debicki, Moses Sumney, Michelle Monaghan, Bobby Cannavale, Halsey, Lily Collins, Giancarlo Esposito and Kevin Bacon. The BFI identifies Debicki as the director helping Maxine toward stardom, Esposito as her agent and Bacon as a private investigator; TheWrap describes Monaghan and Cannavale as LAPD detectives. These characters surround Maxine’s career and the investigation into the killings.

Is Richard Ramirez in MaXXXine?
The trailer’s Night Stalker reference evokes Richard Ramirez, the real serial killer whose crimes took place in 1980s Los Angeles. TheWrap reported that Ramirez was convicted of 13 murders; that number refers to his convictions, not to a body count in the film.
The historical reference is not evidence that Ramirez is the film’s central antagonist. The Los Angeles Times interview reports that the film’s fictional killings draw on details associated with Ramirez, but West expressly distinguished the story from a biographical account: “But this isn’t a Night Stalker story — there’s already half a dozen of those.” The film uses the period’s fear as atmosphere around its fictional Hollywood plot.

Where MaXXXine fits in the trilogy
The release order is X (2022), Pearl (2022), then MaXXXine (2024). Pearl is a prequel; MaXXXine returns to Maxine after the events of X. The BFI describes the 2024 film as the conclusion of West’s horror trilogy. That means it concludes the trilogy released so far, not that West could never revisit the world: TIME reported in June 2024 that he had an idea for another film that might or might not involve Goth.
| Viewing order | Film | How it fits |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | X (2022) | Introduces Maxine and the events that precede her story in MaXXXine. |
| 2 | Pearl (2022) | A prequel in story chronology, released after X. |
| 3 | MaXXXine (2024) | Returns to Maxine after X; the trilogy’s released concluding chapter. |
For a first watch, release order gives the audience the story’s introduction to Maxine before the prequel changes the timeline. Watching Pearl first is also a chronological option, but it is not the order in which the films were released.

What the Hollywood setting adds
West’s films use the entertainment industry as more than backdrop. In a Los Angeles Times interview, he characterized X as a story about strivers trying to break into the business, Pearl as an exploration of the danger of buying into screen fantasies, and MaXXXine as a film about the gap between Hollywood and what a person hopes it will be. That perspective makes Maxine’s ambition central to the trailer’s horror setup: the same industry offering her a break is also a place where a killer is hunting starlets.
West described the production’s period atmosphere to the Associated Press this way: “We recreated the sleazy side of Hollywood in a hopefully charming way,” the AP reported. The trailer’s stylized Hollywood imagery therefore signals a deliberate blend of period texture and artifice, rather than a documentary reconstruction of Ramirez’s crimes.
