Mahaan is worth watching chiefly for Vikram’s commanding performance and the father-son conflict at the heart of its story. Karthik Subbaraj’s 2022 Tamil film pairs a liquor baron’s rise with a pointed question: what happens when ideals are imposed as rules rather than chosen freely? Its ambition is compelling, though the pacing and period atmosphere do not always give the drama room to breathe.
What is Mahaan about?
Gandhi Mahaan grows up in a household where Gandhian principles are enforced as strict rules. On his fortieth birthday, with his wife and son away, he breaks from the life prescribed for him. He later rises as a liquor baron, but his freedom comes with consequences: his son Dada returns as an opponent, and their struggle becomes a family drama shaped by ideology and revenge.
That setup gives the gangster story a more personal center. The film is interested not only in money and power, but also in the gap between professed ideals and lived choices—and in whether rebellion against restraint can become another form of harm.
Vikram is the film’s central strength
Vikram gives Gandhi Mahaan a restless presence that makes the character’s break with his upbringing and pursuit of power feel like parts of the same complicated life. In my view, he is the film’s soul: the performance supplies much of the energy that carries the story across its long runtime.

Both Manoj Kumar R’s review for The Indian Express and Haricharan Pudipeddi’s review for Hindustan Times identify Vikram’s performance as a major strength. Pudipeddi also finds Dhruv Vikram’s heightened style well suited to Dada, the son whose return turns Mahaan’s personal choices into a direct family confrontation.
The father-son conflict gives the film its bite
Mahaan and Dada are not simply opposing personalities. Their conflict tests the principles that shaped one generation and the choices made by the next. The film suggests that ideals can become destructive when imposed without room for personal conviction; at the same time, Mahaan’s pursuit of freedom does not erase the damage he causes.
Rank #2
This tension is the strongest reason the film’s family drama matters beyond its gangster plot. Questions of hypocrisy, freedom and revenge emerge through the relationship rather than as detached lessons. The result is morally messier—and more engaging—than a straightforward story of rebellion rewarded.
Where Mahaan loses momentum
The film’s scale and roughly 2-hour-42-minute runtime give its characters and ideas room, but the pacing can feel uneven. The period setting and atmosphere could also be developed more deeply, which might have made the world around Mahaan’s rise more vivid. Manoj Kumar R of The Indian Express summed up that reservation: “It could have been more if Karthik had slowed the pace a little and dug deep into the period and atmosphere.”

Those shortcomings matter most in the stretches where the story moves forward without adding much texture to its setting or emotional stakes. They do not cancel the force of Vikram’s performance or the central family conflict, but they keep the film from feeling as fully realized as its ideas suggest it could be.
Is Mahaan worth watching?
Yes, especially if you want a Tamil family drama with a crime-story frame and a strong lead performance. Go in expecting a film more interested in ideological conflict and complicated freedom than in a tightly paced gangster thriller. The main trade-off is clear: absorbing performances and thematic ambition, against pacing and atmosphere that could be stronger.
