She put that direction in the context of her openness to different kinds of acting work. Recalling an Off-Broadway play in New York from nearly two years earlier, she said she had enjoyed its limited run. “It doesn’t matter about the medium for me. If it had been a play, I would’ve said yes, but I still would’ve liked a limited run,” she told PEOPLE. PEOPLE’s interview report, published December 30, 2024, gives the full context for both remarks.
When the interview took place—and when it was published
The interview was recorded at the No Good Deed premiere on December 4, 2024. Lavin died on December 29, and PEOPLE published its report the following day, stating that the interview was 25 days before her death. That timing explains the story’s renewed resonance; the conversation itself was a discussion of her career and current work.

What else Lavin shared at the premiere
Lavin described how she approached acting: “As an actor, I like to expose myself through the character.” She also spoke warmly about her life and gratitude for continuing to work: “I have a wonderful life, a wonderful husband [Steve Bakunas] who’s standing over there and I have a very rich and full life and I’m happy to show up. I’m thrilled to show up at this time in my life. I’m really grateful.” These are Lavin’s words as quoted by PEOPLE.
What Lavin was working on
At the premiere, Lavin was promoting No Good Deed, in which she played Phyllis. PEOPLE also reported that she had been filming Hulu’s Mid-Century Modern shortly before her death. The outlet attributed the cause of death to her representative, who said Lavin “passed unexpectedly due to complications from recently discovered lung cancer.”
