Catherine, Princess of Wales, attended the Wimbledon men’s singles final on 14 July 2024 and presented the winner’s trophy to Carlos Alcaraz after he defeated Novak Djokovic. The appearance drew particular attention because she was receiving cancer treatment and had made few public appearances that year. “Kate Middleton” remains a familiar search name for the Princess.
What happened at the 2024 Wimbledon trophy ceremony?
Alcaraz beat Djokovic in the men’s singles final. After the match, the Princess of Wales presented Alcaraz with the winner’s trophy, as reported by the ATP Tour.
Was her attendance announced in advance?
Yes. Kensington Palace confirmed before the final that she planned to attend and present the trophy. ITV News reported the confirmation on 13 July 2024, the day before the match: ITV News.
Why did the appearance attract unusual attention?
The ceremony was part of her established role, but her attendance was notable in the context of her cancer treatment and limited public appearances in 2024. Contemporary coverage described it as a rare public appearance; the Washington Post covered the broader context on 14 July. Her appearance did not establish further details about her health.
