On August 25, 2024, Kate Middleton was photographed wearing a dark brown Hicks & Brown Suffolk Fedora as Prince William drove her to Crathie Kirk near Balmoral Castle in Scotland. The Sunday church outing was a rare surprise appearance during the family’s summer stay at Balmoral—and a reminder that the Princess of Wales has worn the same hat style on more than one occasion.
What happened during the surprise appearance?
People reported that Kate, the Princess of Wales, was photographed in the passenger seat of a car driven by Prince William on the way to Crathie Kirk on August 25, 2024. The church is near Balmoral Castle, where the family was spending the summer. The report described it as a Sunday church outing and a rare surprise appearance. People’s report
Which hat did Kate wear?
People identified the hat as Hicks & Brown’s Suffolk Fedora in dark brown, with a feather detail. The reported identification makes the hat the clearest fashion focus of the appearance; it does not establish that the color is currently available to buy.
Why the fedora drew attention
The appearance fit a pattern of repeat wear. People noted that Kate had worn the same style to Crathie Kirk the previous summer, and had been seen in the style in navy in January 2020 and olive in a 2021 anniversary video. The report’s wording is appropriately cautious: she seems to have the fedora in at least three colors. These are color descriptions tied to reported sightings, not confirmation of current color options.

Hicks & Brown co-founder Alice Leet-Cook told People: “Kate usually wears more formal styles, but she was attending church on a winter’s day and our hats are made from wool, so they do add a bit of warmth.” Her comment refers to a winter church outing generally; it was not a direct explanation of the August 2024 appearance.
What was she wearing with it?
People reported that a fashion blog identified Kate’s coat as Holland Cooper’s Full Length Marlborough Trench Coat in a tawny tartan colorway, and suggested it may have been the same coat she wore the previous summer. That is a secondary identification reported by People, not a direct confirmation from Holland Cooper, so the exact model and colorway should be treated as unconfirmed.
