Cook County’s 2019 resolution says Butler was born in Sunflower, Mississippi, in 1939, and moved with his family to Chicago when he was three. As a teenager, he sang with the Northern Jubilee Gospel Singers alongside Curtis Mayfield. The two later joined the Roosters, which became The Impressions.
How did Jerry Butler become a soul star?
The Impressions and “For Your Precious Love”
In 1958, Butler, Curtis Mayfield, Sam Gooden, and brothers Arthur and Richard Brooks recorded “For Your Precious Love” for Vee-Jay Records. Butler was the lead voice on the group’s breakthrough recording. The Associated Press reported that the label promoted it as Jerry Butler and the Impressions, a choice that contributed to friction within the group and helped set Butler on a solo path.
