The distinction matters: his return to the set was in January, but viewers did not see the new season until June. Renner told the Los Angeles Times he was returning “on the anniversary of my death.” That was his retrospective description of the milestone, not a clinical statement.
What did returning to filming involve?
Renner had finished work on Season 2 before the accident. The Television Academy reported that he had 38 broken bones and that returning to the series initially seemed an impossible prospect. In May 2024, as Season 3 production in Pittsburgh neared its end, Renner described the challenge to the Los Angeles Times: “What I’m willing to do is everything, but what I’m able to do is a different thing.” He also said of rehabilitation, “You go one direction: you get better.”

Production adjustments
According to the Los Angeles Times, Renner fell asleep during takes in his first week back. He and the production decided the schedule was too demanding, and producers adjusted it. He stayed in Pittsburgh for most of the four-month shoot rather than making repeated trips between Pennsylvania and California, and made time for stretching and exercise on set.
Showrunner and executive producer Dave Erickson told the Television Academy, “The action stuff is still there, and he really hasn’t missed a beat.” Co-creator and executive producer Taylor Sheridan said, “I’m in awe of what he has overcome.” These are the producers’ assessments of Renner’s work and recovery; the 38-bone figure is a report about his individual injuries, not a general medical measure.
