What does adult Bobby Hill do?
Bobby is a chef at Robata Chane, a restaurant in Dallas that blends Japanese and German elements. In the Season 14 trailer, he welcomes customers and greets them in Japanese and German, according to ComicBook.com’s July 13, 2025, first-look coverage. The restaurant’s name also evokes robata, a charcoal-based style of cooking.

Hulu’s season description, quoted by Variety, says Bobby is “living his dream as a chef in Dallas.” The Associated Press described him at the season’s launch as a 21-year-old chef at a “down home, German-Asian fusion” restaurant; one dish in the report is grilled mackerel with a mustard pretzel. That detail suggests the show’s culinary mix, not a statement about Bobby’s training.
Is Bobby self-taught?
That has not been established by the sources describing the reveal. They identify Bobby’s occupation and portray him as creative and passionate, but none says whether he learned on his own, through formal training, or by another route. Calling his job “self-taught” goes beyond what the first-look material and launch coverage confirm.

Voice actor Pamela Adlon described Bobby as “always a free thinker, like, outside the box,” in an interview with TV Insider. That characterization helps explain why a distinctive restaurant suits him, but it is not evidence about how he became a chef.
Why is Bobby living in Dallas?
The restaurant gives Bobby a reason to build an independent life away from his parents. Showrunner Saladin K. Patterson told ComicBook.com: “It made more sense since his restaurant is in Dallas to kind of be on his own there, but we had to figure out to what extent.” The choice lets the revival give Bobby stories centered on work and adulthood while Hank and Peggy return to Arlen.

Hulu’s synopsis places Bobby in his 20s and says he is spending that time with former classmates Connie, Joseph and Chane. AP’s launch report gives his age as 21. These descriptions frame the chef job as part of a broader transition into adult life, not simply a new occupation.

Season 14 premiered on Hulu on August 4, 2025, with 10 episodes, according to Variety’s report quoting Hulu’s season details. The synopsis contrasts Bobby’s Dallas life with Hank and Peggy’s return to a changed Arlen after working in Saudi Arabia to build their retirement nest egg.

The time jump is a deliberate change for the series. In TheWrap’s interview, Patterson said the creators built in a 10-year absence for Hank and Peggy. He described aging Bobby as a choice that could remain faithful to the show’s grounded style: “Aging a character like Bobby to an adult certainly feels unique to the world of adult animation. But ‘King of the Hill’ was always such a grounded animated show, it still also feels within the DNA to be ultra realistic, like with the passing of time,”
Adlon likewise described adulthood as a new kind of challenge for Bobby. She told TV Insider: “He’s missing things that people get when they go to college and have that social interaction with everybody. But he’s actually already having to be a grown-up, which is really, really fun,” The job puts that responsibility on screen through a business and a life of his own.
