What Charles told his sons
The Guardian and the Associated Press reported that Charles personally called William and Harry to share the news, along with his three siblings. ITV, citing the Office of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, also reported that Harry had spoken with his father and that Charles personally called both sons. These reports establish that the family notification preceded the palace’s public announcement; they do not indicate a particular prognosis.
What Buckingham Palace announced on 5 February 2024
The palace said diagnostic tests had identified a form of cancer after a separate issue was noticed during Charles’s recent hospital procedure for benign prostate enlargement. It said he had commenced regular treatment and had been advised to postpone public-facing duties, while continuing state business and official paperwork. The announcement did not identify the cancer type or provide a prognosis or detailed treatment plan.
The palace said Charles chose to make the diagnosis public “to prevent speculation and in the hope it may assist public understanding for all those around the world who are affected by cancer.” The prostate condition and the separately identified cancer were distinct; the announcement did not say that Charles had prostate cancer.

Harry’s visit after the announcement
Harry travelled from California to see his father shortly after the news became public. In an interview reported by ITV on 16 February 2024, he said: “I jumped on a plane and went to go see him as soon as I could.” ITV reported that the meeting at Clarence House lasted about 45 minutes. Harry also said he was grateful to have been able to see and spend time with his father.
