But official sources do not describe a joint blueprint for a future reign: “setting up the future” is an interpretation of their documented work, not an announced plan.
What is officially established about William’s role?
William is heir to the throne. His official profile describes his work as supporting the King and the Royal Family through charitable activity, royal duties and engagements in the UK and overseas. That makes his present role both public-facing and supportive of the monarch; it does not, by itself, disclose how a future reign would be organized. The Royal Family’s official profile sets out his position and work.
What does Catherine’s public work focus on?
Catherine undertakes royal duties in support of the King and pursues charitable causes, with a particular emphasis on children’s wellbeing and giving them the best possible start in life. Two named initiatives indicate the continuity of that focus: the Royal Foundation Centre for Early Childhood, launched in 2021, and the Shaping Us campaign, launched in 2023. These are established parts of her public work, rather than evidence of a formally announced plan for a future reign. Her official profile describes her duties and charitable portfolio.
How do their charitable initiatives operate?
Both William and Catherine direct charitable activity through The Royal Foundation. The Royal Family describes the foundation’s approach as developing projects with organizations already working in the relevant fields. This offers a practical way to understand how their public priorities can translate into sustained programmes: the work is pursued with existing organizations, rather than presented only as individual patronages or one-off appearances. The official profiles for William and Catherine describe their connection to the foundation.

What does Earthshot say about William’s longer-term priorities?
The Earthshot Prize is a documented example of William’s long-term public initiative. Its official site sets out five environmental goals for 2030 and describes an annual prize programme. The site also displays cumulative counters of more than 6,000 solutions considered, 90 finalists and 25 winners; it does not date those counters, so they should be read as current site figures rather than as totals for a specified year. Earthshot shows a stated environmental agenda with a defined time horizon, but it is not an announced constitutional or succession plan. The Earthshot Prize site describes the goals and programme.
What do the Royal Household’s figures show—and not show?
The Royal Household’s report for 2025–26, published 25 June 2026, records 708 engagements by the King and Queen. It also records 2,273 engagements completed collectively by the Prince and Princess of Wales and other working members of the Royal Family. That second number is not a personal tally for William and Catherine, and it should not be used as one. The report also states that the Sovereign Grant for 2025–26 was £132.1 million, of which £67.5 million was allocated to preserving and protecting occupied royal palaces. It gives an annual grant of £99.9 million for 2027–32, following completion of the Buckingham Palace reservicing programme. These figures provide institutional and financial context, not evidence of a specific future structure for the monarchy. The Royal Household’s financial report contains the figures.
In that report, Keeper of the Privy Purse James Chalmers described the modern monarchy as adapting to an evolving world and said the Royal Family’s “soft power” plays an increasingly vital diplomatic role. This is an institutional assessment by Chalmers, not a personal statement or blueprint from William or Catherine. The report was published on 25 June 2026.

No joint plan is specified in the official materials cited here. They document William’s position as heir and his support for the King’s work, Catherine’s charitable focus, their use of The Royal Foundation, and William’s environmental initiative. Those facts support discussion of the direction and continuity of their public work. Claims about future royal roles, staffing, constitutional changes, timing or private family decisions go beyond what these sources establish and should be treated as speculation unless supported by a direct announcement.
