The appearance marked her first state banquet since November 2023 and her first tiara appearance since before her 2024 cancer diagnosis. It was not her first state visit since the diagnosis: she took part in the Amir of Qatar’s state visit in December 2024, but did not attend its banquet.
What happened at the French state banquet?
King Charles III hosted French President Emmanuel Macron and First Lady Brigitte Macron at Windsor Castle during a three-day state visit. Catherine attended the banquet on 8 July 2025 wearing the Queen Mary Lover’s Knot tiara, also known as the Cambridge Lover’s Knot. InStyle’s report describes Windsor Castle as the venue because refurbishment work made Buckingham Palace unsuitable for the event; it also calls this the first French state visit at Windsor Castle since 2014.
InStyle counts the Lover’s Knot as one Catherine has worn at 10 of her 15 tiara appearances since marrying Prince William. The choice was not new for a state banquet: she wore the same tiara for the 22 November 2022 banquet for South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, as Vogue reported.
What is the Lover’s Knot tiara?
The tiara was made by the House of Garrard for Queen Mary. Vogue says it was commissioned in 1913 and describes it as set with diamonds and 19 hanging pearls. Other accounts give a 1913–1914 commission date or date its creation to 1914, so the precise year is not consistent across the reporting. ABC News’s 2015 account gives the 1913–1914 range.

Why is the tiara associated with Princess Diana?
Queen Elizabeth II lent the tiara to Diana after her 1981 marriage, and Diana wore it as a member of the royal family. According to InStyle, Diana returned it after her 1996 divorce. Vogue reports that Queen Elizabeth II later passed it to Catherine after her 2011 marriage to Prince William. These accounts explain the tiara’s association with both women, but do not establish Catherine as its personal owner.
When did Catherine first wear it?
ABC News reported that Catherine first wore the Lover’s Knot publicly at the Buckingham Palace diplomatic reception on 8 December 2015. Subsequent reported appearances include a 2017 state banquet for Spain, a 2019 dinner for the Netherlands, the 2022 South Africa banquet and the 2025 French banquet.

Did Catherine say why she chose it?
No direct statement from Catherine explaining her choice or its personal meaning is established in the cited coverage. Its history links the tiara to Diana, but calling this appearance a deliberate tribute would be interpretation, not a confirmed explanation.
