Yes. Jimmy Kimmel said he obtained Italian citizenship, citing his grandmother’s family roots in Candida, in Italy’s province of Avellino. Months later, he discussed the political context on The Sarah Silverman Podcast, describing the situation under Donald Trump as worse than he had expected. The reports do not establish that Kimmel plans to move to Italy.
What did Jimmy Kimmel say about getting Italian citizenship?
Kimmel announced the news at a Los Angeles event marking Italian Republic Day in early June 2025. ANSA published its event report on June 2; later coverage described the announcement as June 4, so the reports differ on the precise date. At the event, ANSA quoted him saying: “I just got citizenship, thanks to my beloved grandmother Edith, whose family came from Candida, in the province of Avellino.” ANSA’s June 2 event report describes the occasion and his remarks.
How is Kimmel’s family connected to Italy?
His grandmother’s family
Kimmel credited his grandmother Edith and said her family came from Candida, a town in the province of Avellino. This is the family connection he named when announcing his citizenship.
His grandfather’s parents
In remarks reported by ANSA, Kimmel also said his grandfather’s parents came to New York from Ischia after the 1883 earthquake devastated Casamicciola and killed most of the family. That is Kimmel’s account of his family history, not an independently detailed genealogy in the cited coverage. ANSA’s August 14 report includes the account.

The Guardian’s August 13 coverage reports the podcast comments.
