Kamala Harris’s reported method builds a savory cooking liquid first, then braises greens in it for hours. A September 4, 2024, Food & Wine article, reproduced by France Head Topics, described her explaining the process to chef Mashama Bailey at a Savannah, Georgia, rally. The report does not give a full recipe: it leaves out the greens variety, quantities, batch size, temperature, and exact cooking time.
How Harris reportedly cooks her greens
The Food & Wine report describes a sequence rather than a measured recipe. Harris said she was making greens for a friend’s Christmas Eve party, and the article says she had shared a video on social platforms the preceding Saturday. It does not establish the video’s exact date.
- She washes a very large amount of greens before cooking. The report says she used a bathtub, a detail about preparing that batch—not a general food-safety recommendation.
- She chops and renders bacon, then adds sliced garlic, chili peppers, water, and a little chicken stock.
- She lets the liquid and aromatics simmer before stirring in the greens.
- She braises the greens for a few hours.
- She finishes them with white vinegar and Tabasco.
The reported order matters: the liquid and aromatics simmer before the greens go in, and the greens then cook slowly in that flavorful base.
What the report does—and does not—identify
The article does not name the greens. It suggests they could be a hearty variety because the reported method involves hours of simmering, but that is the article author’s inference, not a confirmed identification. Collards, mustard greens, or turnip greens should not be presented as Harris’s choice on this evidence.

Nor does the report supply ingredient amounts, a batch size, an exact temperature, or a precise cooking time. It is useful as an account of her approach, but not enough to reproduce her dish reliably as a recipe.
The vinegar and Tabasco finish
The report attributes the phrase “that right amount of vinegar” to Harris describing Tabasco’s vinegar quality. Because the original video was not independently available for transcription, that wording should be understood as the article’s reported quote.

Equipment and practical takeaway
A large pot is a practical choice for braising a substantial amount of greens for several hours, but the report names no required capacity, material, or brand. It does not endorse particular cookware. Its distinctive preparation detail—the bathtub wash—should not be taken as guidance for home food handling.
