Kamala Harris made a surprise appearance in the cold open of Saturday Night Live on November 2, 2024, three days before the presidential election. Facing Maya Rudolph, who was playing Harris, she joined a mirror-image sketch that ended with the show’s familiar opening cry: “Live from New York, it’s Saturday night!”
What happened in the SNL cold open?
The official SNL video, titled “2024 Pre-Election Cold Open”, was published November 2, 2024. Its description identifies a pre-election segment featuring Maya Rudolph as Harris and James Austin Johnson as Donald Trump.

In the sketch, Harris appeared opposite Rudolph, seated across from her in matching outfits as if looking into a mirror. Harris offered Rudolph’s character encouragement: “And I’m just here to remind you, you got this.” They followed it with the pun “Keep Kamala and carry-on-ala,” and spoke about their shared belief in the promise of America. The two then delivered the show’s signature introduction together.
Why the appearance came just before Election Day
The appearance took place on the Saturday before the November 5, 2024 election. The Associated Press reported that Harris briefly left campaigning in battleground states for the New York visit. It was a last-minute campaign stop and a high-profile entertainment appearance, but the appearance alone does not establish any effect on viewers or votes.
