What is the Trainwreck documentary series?
Trainwreck is the banner used for these Netflix documentaries, which revisit high-profile stories and public spectacles. The July slate brings together very different subjects rather than one continuous story: corporate culture, a viral party, a widely covered balloon incident, a reality-TV production, and an internet phenomenon.
What is each documentary about?
The Cult of American Apparel
The preview describes a look at the retailer’s rise and collapse through employees’ accounts, with founder Dov Charney central to the story. It says former employees make allegations of ethical misconduct; those are allegations attributed to people in the film’s account, not adjudicated findings established by the preview. Sally Rose Griffiths is named as director.

#1 Best Overall
- Bullet Train DVD
Balloon Boy
The preview says the film revisits the 2009 episode in which a father reported that his son had drifted away in a homemade balloon. The balloon landed without a child inside. Gillian Pachter is named as director.
P.I. Moms
The subject is a 2010 Lifetime reality-TV project. The preview says its investigations allegedly fell apart amid sabotage claims and accusations involving a drug operation and a police officer. Those claims should be understood as allegations described in a preview, not as independently established conclusions. Phil Bowman is named as director.
Rank #2
Storm Area 51
The film follows the Facebook event “Storm Area 51, They Can’t Stop All of Us.” The preview characterizes it as a joke that attracted broad online and media attention. Jack MacInnes is named as director.

How to choose among the five
The slate may suit viewers with different documentary interests:
Rank #3
- Business and workplace culture: The Cult of American Apparel.
- Viral social-media events: The Real Project X or Storm Area 51.
- A strange, widely discussed news story: Balloon Boy.
- Reality television and contested allegations: P.I. Moms.
The preview announces subjects and directors, but it does not provide a basis for ranking the films by quality.
Do the dates confirm current Netflix availability?
No. The dates are the schedule announced in the June 27, 2025 BGR preview. That account does not confirm whether each documentary arrived on its planned date or whether it was available in every territory. For present-day availability, check Netflix’s catalog for your country.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Was July unusually large for Netflix documentaries?
The preview supports a narrower point: Netflix had five Trainwreck documentaries planned across July 2025, one per week. Its description of the month as “huge” is editorial framing, not a measured comparison with other months or with Netflix documentaries overall.
