Getty’s catalog identifies it as a Popperfoto image, making it a late photograph often described as one of Garland’s last. The available record does not establish that it was the final photograph ever taken of her, and the image itself cannot explain her health or state of mind.
What the Heathrow photograph shows
Getty catalogs the image under the title “Judy Garland In London.” Its caption identifies Garland and Mickey Deans at Heathrow Airport on May 21, 1969, and credits Popperfoto. The image is listed as rights-managed: Getty’s catalog record.
The date and setting make it a late photograph from Garland’s life. But “last photo” is stronger than the record supports. The sources available do not conclusively establish that this was the last image taken, and claims about later June photographs are not resolved here. It is more accurate to call it one of the last known photographs than to call it definitively her last.
What the image cannot tell us about Garland
A photograph is not evidence of a person’s diagnosis, sobriety, finances, or private thoughts. Garland’s appearance in this image cannot establish any of those things, nor can the image by itself explain the hardships associated with her life. Its documented value is narrower: it records Garland and Deans at Heathrow on a specific date.

Check the relevant rights information before reusing an image.
What is established about her death
Garland died in London on June 22, 1969, aged 47. The Guardian’s account of the 1969 inquest reported that the coroner recorded accidental death from quinal barbitone poisoning. Westminster coroner Gavin Thurston said: “There was absolutely no evidence to suggest this was a deliberate action by her.” The Guardian’s report is the basis for the inquest finding cited here.

That official finding should remain distinct from speculation about Garland’s final hours. The photograph was taken about a month earlier; it does not prove intent or provide a medical account of her condition.

For many viewers, Garland remains inseparable from her role as Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz (1939). The Smithsonian identifies her as the actor who played Dorothy and holds the Ruby Slippers she wore in the film. Her 1939 Decca recording of “Over the Rainbow” reached No. 5 on the Billboard chart that year, according to the Smithsonian’s collection record.

Her legacy also extends beyond that film and song. The Library of Congress describes 1961 as a peak year in Garland’s career and discusses her Carnegie Hall recording in its essay on Judy Garland. That context helps explain why an ordinary airport photograph still draws attention: it shows a famous performer near the end of her life, but it cannot stand in for the breadth of her work or the details of her private experience.
