Master Tengen is an ancient jujutsu sorcerer whose barrier techniques help support jujutsu society. Tengen can live indefinitely, but still ages; a merger with a compatible Star Plasma Vessel was meant to prevent further evolution. After the chosen vessel, Riko Amanai, was killed, Tengen’s transformation continued, making Tengen’s secluded existence a major part of Kenjaku’s plans.
What is Master Tengen’s role in jujutsu society?
Tengen is best understood as a source of crucial infrastructure, not simply as the leader of all sorcerers. The character is an exceptionally important barrier specialist, and Tengen’s barriers underpin aspects of jujutsu society. The story does not make Tengen’s importance a matter of combat prowess: it comes from long experience, barrier expertise, and the consequences of what happens to Tengen.
The official anime site’s interview with Satoru Gojo’s voice actor, Yūichi Nakamura, also points to Tengen’s importance to the series’ world-building. Nakamura notes that Tengen’s name appears in the main story as an important presence. Read the official anime-site interview.
Is Tengen immortal, and why does Tengen look different?
In the manga’s explanation, Tengen’s innate technique prevents death from natural causes but does not stop aging. As Tengen ages, the technique drives an ongoing evolution. “Immortal” therefore means that Tengen can continue living, not that the body remains unchanged forever.

A merger with a compatible Star Plasma Vessel is meant to reset the body’s information and the technique, preventing that evolution from continuing unchecked. Without the merger, Tengen’s transformation proceeds beyond an ordinary human form. The manga presents this as a supernatural consequence of Tengen’s technique, not a real-world biological process.
What is a Star Plasma Vessel?
A Star Plasma Vessel is a person compatible with Tengen for the periodic merger. The vessel’s role is tied to maintaining Tengen’s condition; it is not a title for a general class of sorcerer or a position in the jujutsu hierarchy.

Riko Amanai was selected as the vessel for the merger planned in the modern era. Gojo and Geto’s mission to escort her to Tengen is the central setup of the Hidden Inventory/Premature Death story. VIZ’s description of Jujutsu Kaisen, Vol. 9 identifies the Star Plasma Vessel mission and Toji Fushiguro as the attacker.
What happened when Riko Amanai’s merger failed?
Toji killed Riko before the planned merger, so Tengen did not merge with her. The story explains that Tengen stabilized after the failed merger but continued evolving, leaving Tengen in a state beyond ordinary human form and with diminished individual self-awareness.

This change helps explain why Tengen is not just a distant figure from the past. Tengen’s altered state becomes relevant to the later conflict, when access to Tengen and the consequences of that transformation enter Kenjaku’s plans.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why does Kenjaku need Tengen?
Tengen’s importance to Kenjaku follows from the same qualities that make Tengen important to jujutsu society: barrier expertise, a long history, and a transformed state with broad consequences. VIZ’s description of Jujutsu Kaisen, Vol. 23 places Kenjaku at the Tombs of the Star Corridor, where Tengen is secluded. That description establishes Tengen’s presence in the later conflict without revealing its full resolution.
