The festival says it follows Sebastian from Greenwich Village folk clubs through the Lovin’ Spoonful’s national success, his impromptu performance at Woodstock in 1969 and his later work on “Welcome Back,” the theme song for Welcome Back, Kotter.
What is I’ll Paint Rainbows All Over Your Blues about?
The Woodstock Film Festival’s event listing describes a film tracing several chapters of John Sebastian’s career: his early days on small stages in 1960s Greenwich Village, the Lovin’ Spoonful’s rise and appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show, his unplanned Woodstock Festival performance, and his later success writing and performing “Welcome Back.” That is the scope announced by the festival, rather than a detailed scene-by-scene synopsis. How does the film connect Sebastian’s career chapters?
Greenwich Village and the Lovin’ Spoonful
Sebastian founded the Lovin’ Spoonful and was its lead singer-songwriter. The band’s early commercial success gives the documentary’s Greenwich Village chapter a clear next step: the move from club stages to national television and hit records. Pepperdine University notes that the group’s first seven singles reached the U.S. Top 10; its listing does not state a publication year. Pepperdine University
Woodstock in 1969
Sebastian performed at the 1969 Woodstock Festival. The new film’s announced story includes that performance, but it should not be confused with the better-known ensemble documentary Woodstock. The American Film Institute describes the 1970 film as a record of the three-day festival held near Bethel, New York, in August 1969. The two films therefore have different subjects: one follows Sebastian’s career, while the older film documents the festival as an event. American Film Institute

Its connection to the show offers a later-career counterpoint to the documentary’s 1960s folk and festival chapters. Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum
