Cena dances in his chair during the challenge, and the footage later found a second life in social-media edits.
Where is the John Cena headphones dance from?
The footage is from a 2017 appearance by John Cena on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. In the Whisper Challenge, a participant wears headphones while another person tries to communicate a phrase; Cena dances in his seat during the segment. The official clip is titled “John Cena and Jimmy Totally Nail the Whisper Challenge”, as identified by Know Your Meme. The headphones are part of the challenge setup; the sources do not establish their brand or model.
How did the clip become a meme?
Know Your Meme traces the clip’s later circulation through several social-media milestones. It dates a FallonTonight TikTok repost to April 23, 2022, and a CapCut template called “John Cena Dancing” to April 13, 2023. The template was used with different captions, and Fifty Fifty’s “Cupid” became a prominent sound in later TikTok edits.
The engagement figures reported by Know Your Meme are historical snapshots from its 2023-era account, not current totals or independently verified platform-wide counts:

Is the headphones dance the origin of “You Can’t See Me”?
No. The dance clip and the hand gesture have separate origin stories. The headphones footage is a 2017 television challenge segment that later circulated as a meme. WWE’s account of the taunt describes a family joke that Cena adapted into a wrestling gesture, with the spoken phrase developing later.

| Headphones dance | 2017 appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon | Cena dances in his chair during the Whisper Challenge; the footage later becomes a social-media meme. |
| “You Can’t See Me” gesture | Origin recounted by WWE in 2016 and 2018 | Cena adapted a goofy dance his younger brother Sean performed, and the gesture became a wrestling taunt. WWE says the spoken phrase came later. |
How did John Cena come up with the “You Can’t See Me” gesture?
In a 2016 excerpt from Hustle, Loyalty & Respect: The World of John Cena, published by WWE, Cena says his younger brother Sean did a dance in which he moved his head around his hands. Cena changed the movement: “Instead of shaking my head around my hand, I shook my hand around my head.” WWE’s excerpt says the gesture first aired on Velocity; the spoken “You Can’t See Me” element developed afterward. Read WWE’s March 12, 2016 excerpt.
WWE’s later account adds context to the brother’s inspiration. In its December 11, 2018 report on Cena’s appearance on The Graham Norton Show, WWE says Sean was imitating a dance move from 50 Cent’s “In Da Club” music video while Cena was recording his theme music, then dared Cena to perform the move on television. Cena’s reported response was, “What the hell do I have to lose?” This is a complementary account of the hand gesture’s origin, not the source of the headphones clip. See WWE’s 2018 report.

What song is in the John Cena dancing meme?
The original headphones footage is from the Whisper Challenge clip; the sources cited here do not identify a song as the defining audio of that original segment. In later meme edits, Know Your Meme identifies Fifty Fifty’s “Cupid” as a prominent associated TikTok sound. That distinction matters: the song is associated with later edits, not established as the music behind Cena’s original dance clip.
