No. WrestleMania 41 was John Cena’s last WrestleMania, not his last WWE match. He announced in July 2024 that 2025 would be his final year of in-ring competition, then continued his farewell tour after WrestleMania. WWE later announced that his final match would be against Gunther at Saturday Night’s Main Event on December 13, 2025. WWE’s current profile says Cena retired from in-ring competition at the end of 2025.
What Cena announced in 2024
At Money in the Bank in Toronto in July 2024, Cena made a surprise appearance and announced that 2025 would be his final year competing in the ring for WWE. WWE reported that he named the 2025 Royal Rumble, Elimination Chamber and WrestleMania 41 as his last editions of those events. WWE’s announcement framed the plan as a retirement from in-ring competition—not an announcement that he would immediately leave WWE altogether.
The distinction matters: naming his last WrestleMania identified the final time he expected to compete at that event. It did not mean his entire farewell tour, or his in-ring career, would end at WrestleMania 41.
Why WrestleMania 41 was not his final match
WrestleMania 41, held in April 2025, was a stop on Cena’s year-long farewell tour. WWE’s current John Cena profile says he won his 17th world title at the event. WWE later described WrestleMania 41 and SummerSlam as tour stops before the separately planned final match.

WWE/TKO said Cena’s 2024 retirement announcement generated more than 65 million social media views in its first 24 hours, and called it WWE’s most-viewed social segment since WrestleMania XL. That figure is WWE/TKO’s reported measurement, not an independently verified count. The company’s July 8, 2024 release includes the claim.
From announcement to final match
| Date | What happened | What it meant |
|---|---|---|
| July 2024 | Cena announced at Money in the Bank in Toronto that 2025 would be his final year of WWE in-ring competition. | He identified the 2025 Royal Rumble, Elimination Chamber and WrestleMania 41 as his last editions of those events. |
| April 2025 | Cena competed at WrestleMania 41 and won his 17th world title, according to WWE’s current profile. | WrestleMania 41 was his last WrestleMania, but the farewell tour continued. |
| September 30, 2025 | WWE announced that Cena’s final match would headline Saturday Night’s Main Event on December 13 in Washington, D.C. | The scheduled finale was months after WrestleMania 41. |
| December 5, 2025 | WWE identified Gunther as Cena’s opponent for the final match. | The event preview named the opponent; it did not change WrestleMania 41’s role as a tour stop. |
| End of 2025 | WWE’s current profile says Cena retired from in-ring competition. | The stated retirement concerns wrestling in the ring, not a departure from WWE altogether. |
WWE’s September 30 announcement quoted Chief Content Officer Paul “Triple H” Levesque saying, “John’s contributions to WWE are immeasurable. There are no words that can truly relay how much he means to this business.” The company announced the December 13 event at Capital One Arena in Washington, D.C.; its December 5 preview named Gunther as Cena’s opponent.

What “retirement” means here
WWE’s retrospective wording is specific: Cena retired from in-ring competition at the end of 2025. That supports saying his wrestling career in the ring ended then. It does not, by itself, establish that he left WWE in every capacity.
In short, the sequence is a 2024 retirement announcement, a 2025 farewell tour that included WrestleMania 41, and a final match scheduled for December. The phrase “last WrestleMania” describes his final appearance at that annual event; it should not be used as a synonym for “last match.”
