What Jon Stewart Said About Apple, AI and Lina Khan

Jon Stewart alleged that Apple asked his team not to interview Lina Khan for the show’s podcast and separately objected to an AI segment. The account remains unconfirmed by Apple in the contemporaneous reports reviewed.

Jon Stewart alleged on The Daily Show on April 1, 2024, that Apple asked his team not to interview then-FTC Chair Lina Khan for the podcast connected to The Problem with Jon Stewart. He also said Apple would not let the show air an earlier segment criticizing industry claims about artificial intelligence. These are Stewart’s public account of two related but distinct disputes—not independently confirmed explanations of Apple’s decisions.

What did Jon Stewart say Apple asked him to do?

In a conversation with Khan, Stewart said: “I wanted to have you on a podcast, and Apple asked us not to do it.” He added: “They literally said, ‘Please don’t talk to her’ – having nothing to do with what you do for a living,” as reported by The Guardian.

The proposed interview was for the podcast associated with Apple TV+’s The Problem with Jon Stewart. Stewart’s account concerns a request not to have Khan on that podcast; it does not by itself establish Apple’s reason for the request.

What was the AI segment?

Stewart separately connected the dispute to an earlier segment on the show. He said, “I think they just … they wouldn’t let us do that dumb thing we did in the first act on AI,” according to The Guardian’s report. Ars Technica described the segment as a critique of optimistic technology-industry claims about AI and its potential to replace workers.

The Khan interview and the AI segment should not be collapsed into one event: Stewart described a planned podcast guest and a separate piece of show content. His remarks link them as examples of what he said Apple would not allow, but do not independently document the company’s internal decision-making.

What did Lina Khan say?

Khan responded by discussing the broader risks of concentrated corporate power and the role of antitrust law. In the exchange, she said that antitrust and antimonopoly laws were intended to safeguard against the concentration of economic power. She also remarked: “monopolies are not fans of enforcing the anti-monopoly laws, and so that type of pushback is baked in,” as reported by The Guardian.

Those comments express Khan’s general view about corporate resistance to regulation. They are not a finding that Apple made the request Stewart described, nor a determination of Apple’s motive.

What is known about Apple’s position?

Contemporaneous reports by Axios and The Guardian said Apple had not immediately responded to their requests for comment. That describes the reporting at the time; it does not establish whether Apple commented later. The reports reviewed here do not provide an Apple explanation or independent confirmation of Stewart’s account.

How does the show’s cancellation fit in?

The Guardian reported that Apple canceled a planned eight-episode third season of The Problem with Jon Stewart in October 2023 amid reported disagreements over topics, particularly China. That context predates Stewart’s public comments about Khan and the AI segment, and it does not prove why Apple allegedly objected to either one.
