Jimmy Valiant’s case as an underrated wrestling entertainer rests less on a ranking than on the way he turned a regional run into a distinctive character story. In Jim Crockett Promotions’ Mid-Atlantic territory, he moved from the heel King James Valiant to the flamboyant Boogie Woogie Man, pairing a memorable entrance with rivalries that gave fans a reason to care. The point is not that Valiant was unknown, but that a career remembered mainly through national title histories can miss the craft of regional performance.
Before the Boogie Woogie Man: a career across territories
Valiant’s best-known Mid-Atlantic character came after years of work elsewhere. In a Mid-Atlantic Gateway interview, he recalled three stints with the World Wide Wrestling Federation (WWWF), each lasting more than a year, two stints in the American Wrestling Association (AWA), and work in the World Wrestling Association (WWA). These are his retrospective recollections, not a complete independently verified match chronology. Mid-Atlantic Gateway interview

In another interview, Valiant said he began wrestling in 1964. In 2004, he described himself as undertaking a farewell tour; that was his statement at the time, not a current retirement date. Mid-Atlantic Gateway interview
How King James became the Boogie Woogie Man
Valiant recalled arriving in the Charlotte area after a Memphis run in which he filled in while Jerry Lawler was injured. He said he was initially paired with Greg Valentine as King James Valiant, a heel managed by Lord Alfred Hayes. He characterized that version as brief before his identity shifted toward the Boogie Woogie Man. The chronology and details here are Valiant’s account of the change. Mid-Atlantic Gateway interview

| Persona | Presentation | Place in the story |
|---|---|---|
| King James Valiant | Heel character, paired with Greg Valentine and managed by Lord Alfred Hayes, according to Valiant | His initial Mid-Atlantic identity, as he recalled it |
| Boogie Woogie Man | More vivid, theatrical personality associated with entrance music and fan connection | The character most closely tied to his Mid-Atlantic popularity |
This change matters because it shows Valiant’s appeal was not simply a fixed gimmick. The Boogie Woogie Man gave him a recognizable way to enter, engage, and stand apart. The Mid-Atlantic Gateway’s account places him in the territory from 1981 until the promotion’s mid-1980s end and describes him as fondly remembered and popular there. Mid-Atlantic Gateway
Why the Mid-Atlantic run made an entertainer’s case
The Mid-Atlantic Gateway identifies several of Valiant’s defining rivalries: Ivan Koloff, including a feud over the NWA Television Title; the House of Humperdink; the Great Kabuki; and Paul Jones’s stable. Its introduction also notes his entrance to “The Boy From New York City.” Taken together, these details show how his presentation extended beyond results: a signature song, a strong persona, and antagonists who gave the character a dramatic setting. That is a concrete basis for calling him an underrated entertainer, provided “underrated” is understood as an argument about what gets remembered. National title histories are one way to tell wrestling history; they do not necessarily capture the appeal of a performer whose strongest case is rooted in a territory, its recurring feuds, and its fans. The available sources establish that Valiant was remembered fondly in Mid-Atlantic, but they do not provide audience figures, ratings, or a measurable historical ranking.
The Valiant Brothers and a longer legacy
Jimmy’s work was not limited to the Boogie Woogie Man. WWE’s profile of the Valiant Brothers offers an institutional reference for the tag-team act and notes Jimmy’s later Virginia training school. It is a profile of the brothers, however, rather than a detailed chronology of Jimmy’s solo career. WWE: The Valiant Brothers
