Jey Uso defeated Jimmy Uso at WrestleMania XL on April 6, 2024, ending their escalating Bloodline conflict with a Spear and an Uso Splash. The match was the payoff to a split that began before SummerSlam: Jimmy said he was protecting his brother, while Jey saw his actions as a betrayal and left The Bloodline.
Why the Usos’ split mattered
Jimmy and Jey’s rivalry grew out of the collapse of The Bloodline, the faction they had helped build alongside Roman Reigns. Their tag-team partnership had already suffered a major setback at WrestleMania 39. On April 1, 2023, Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn beat the Usos to take the tag titles, ending their 622-day reign, according to WWE’s recap.
The title loss is important context, but WWE’s account does not establish it as the cause of Jimmy’s later interference. The brothers’ disagreement developed within a wider struggle over loyalty and power in The Bloodline.
How tensions grew before SummerSlam
By June 2023, WWE was presenting Jey with a choice: side with Jimmy or remain with The Bloodline. During Jey’s United States Championship match against Austin Theory, Jimmy tried to kick Solo Sikoa but accidentally struck Jey instead. Theory retained the title. WWE’s June 9 recap characterized the kick as accidental, showing that the brothers’ relationship was already under pressure before Jimmy’s later, deliberate intervention.

The stakes rose when Jey challenged Roman Reigns in Tribal Combat. WWE’s July 21 preview described the match as having no disqualifications or count-outs, with victory possible by pinfall or submission. It was a contest over the leadership of The Bloodline, not yet a standalone grudge match between the twins.
Why did Jimmy turn on Jey?
At SummerSlam on August 5, 2023, Jimmy appeared in disguise and revealed himself during Jey’s Tribal Combat match with Reigns. As Jey seemed close to winning, Jimmy superkicked him. Reigns then beat Jey and remained Tribal Chief and champion. WWE’s event recap framed Jimmy’s act as a betrayal.

WWE’s later explanation makes clear that the brothers interpreted the act differently. Jimmy said he had interfered to protect Jey. Jey rejected that explanation and left The Bloodline. In WWE’s March 15, 2024 WrestleMania preview, Jimmy’s grievance was described this way: “Jimmy, on the other hand, carries the resentment of his brother leaving him and The Bloodline in what he deems to be Jey’s attempt to make himself a bigger star.” That is the character conflict as WWE presented it, not evidence of the performers’ real-life motives.
How the brothers went from a faction split to a WrestleMania match
After SummerSlam, Jimmy explained his actions. On August 11, WWE reported that Jey attacked Jimmy and Reigns and appeared to quit WWE. The later WrestleMania preview summarized the two sides: Jimmy maintained that he acted to protect Jey, while resenting Jey’s departure; Jey chose to leave the faction and ultimately challenged his brother. WWE’s August 11 report covered Jey’s apparent departure, while the preview framed the WrestleMania match as the result of their opposing interpretations.

Who won Jimmy Uso vs. Jey Uso at WrestleMania 40?
Jey won their first WrestleMania singles match on April 6, 2024, at WrestleMania XL. WWE’s official results list him as the winner. In the match recap, the action begins before the bell, when Jey dives between the ropes. Jimmy pleads for his brother’s hand, then returns to the attack. Jey counters with a Spear and finishes the match with an Uso Splash.
WWE’s recap cast the crowd’s “YEET” versus “NO YEET” chants as part of the match’s presentation. The result settled the WrestleMania contest, but the story’s central conflict was the brothers’ disagreement over what Jimmy’s SummerSlam intervention meant.
