Joe Thomas Karackattu’s 43-minute documentary Guli’s Children follows his search for a family in China whose genealogy is reported to trace its ancestry to Calicut, now Kozhikode. The film uses that family story to explore historical and cultural connections between Kerala and China. The ancestry is reported by the filmmaker and press coverage; the sources documenting the film do not independently verify every detail of the genealogy or migration.
What is Guli’s Children about?
University event pages describe Guli’s Children as a 43-minute non-fiction documentary and a visual presentation of Karackattu’s research. In its account, “Guli” is the Chinese name for Calicut, the historic port now known as Kozhikode. The film uses that name and the reported family history to frame a broader inquiry into Kerala–China connections.
Karackattu, identified by Scroll as a professor at IIT Madras, said he chose film because he saw “a visual element” in his research and believed it could reach a wider audience than a paper or book. The result is presented as a journey through places, interviews, historical accounts, material objects and genealogy, rather than as a narrowly argued academic paper.
What family did Karackattu find in China?
Press accounts say Karackattu’s search led him to Mr. Ma and his family in Guangxi, China. Their family records were described as tracing their ancestry to a Malayali from Calicut. Scroll called Mr. Ma a 14th-generation descendant; that is a reported description of the family genealogy, not independent confirmation of the number of generations or the ancestor’s identity.

The reports also place the alleged migration roughly 700 years in the past. That chronology should be read as part of the family story and the documentary’s framing, not as a precisely established date or a fully documented account of how and why the ancestor travelled. The sources available for the film’s coverage do not independently authenticate the genealogy or the circumstances of migration.
How did the documentary connect the family story to Kerala’s history?
The documentary places the search within a wider history of contact between Kerala ports and China. Scroll points to Malayalam terms beginning with cheena, including cheenachatti, cheenabharani and cheena vala, as familiar reminders of historical commercial and cultural connections. These examples support the film’s interpretive frame, but by themselves do not establish a specific route, date or direction of exchange.

A 2016 report attributed to Karackattu names Chinese works such as Yingyai Shenglan, Xingcha Shenglan and Ming Shilu as containing references to connections with Kerala ports. That report, syndicated by Thiruvananthapuram First and attributed there to The Times of India, is a pointer to those records rather than a substitute for consulting translations or the primary texts. The film’s historical context is therefore best understood as an investigation and interpretation, not a comprehensive account of medieval trade or diplomacy.
What was involved in the search?
The National University of Singapore’s Asia Research Institute flyer describes more than two years of research and nearly 20,000 kilometres of fieldwork across India and China. These are figures in the film’s promotional description, not independently measured evidence for its historical conclusions. Scroll describes Karackattu’s reported route from Kerala through Shanghai and Beijing to Guangxi, where he met Mr. Ma and his family.

It helps to separate three kinds of evidence: the documentary’s own presentation, press accounts of Karackattu’s search and the underlying historical records. The first two describe the reported family genealogy and the filmmaker’s interpretation. The sources documenting the film do not provide an independent verification of the Ma family’s ancestry, nor do they supply a full primary-source history of Kerala–China relations.
