He spoke about privacy and public speculation, but did not confirm theories about the breakup or the meaning of Swift’s songs.
What Joe Alwyn said about the breakup
Alwyn described the relationship as “a long, loving, fully committed relationship of over six and a half years.” That is his description, as reported by the Los Angeles Times and ABC News, rather than an independently verified measure of its duration.
He said he hoped people could understand the difficulty of ending a relationship of that kind. What made the situation unusual, he said, was that “one week later, it’s suddenly in the public domain and the outside world is able to weigh in.” The remarks appeared in an interview promoting his film Kinds of Kindness, published in the June 16, 2024 issue of The Sunday Times Style, according to Elle.
Why he wanted to keep the relationship private
Alwyn said he and Swift had mutually agreed to keep the relationship’s private details out of public view. “It was never something to commodify and I see no reason to change that now,” he said, as quoted by ABC News.

He described the sudden move from a private experience into public discussion as jarring: “So you have something very real suddenly thrown into a very unreal space: tabloids, social media, press, where it is then dissected, speculated on, pulled out of shape beyond recognition.” He added that “there is always going to be a gap between what is known and what is said,” and said he had made his peace with that. ABC News and Elle reproduced those remarks.
Did Joe Alwyn say whether he listened to The Tortured Poets Department?
When asked whether he had listened to Swift’s album, Alwyn did not give a direct yes-or-no answer in the reported exchange. He turned instead to the breakup, their decision to protect private details, and the public response. The interview therefore does not establish whether he listened to the album; the question and exchange are reported in ABC News’ account of the interview.

What his remarks do—and do not—tell us
Alwyn’s comments offer his perspective on the relationship’s end and the attention surrounding it. They do not identify a specific cause for the breakup, endorse tabloid accounts, or confirm that any Swift lyric refers to him. He also said he felt good about his circumstances, personally and professionally, telling ABC News, “I feel really good.”
