Jimmy Kimmel announced in May 2024 that his son Billy had undergone a third open-heart surgery. Kimmel said the operation involved a new valve and described Billy as happy and healthy after the procedure. The announcement is a 2024 update; the reports available here do not establish Billy’s current health in 2026.
What happened to Jimmy Kimmel’s son Billy?
Billy underwent his third open-heart surgery over Memorial Day weekend in 2024. In a message quoted by Good Morning America on May 28, Kimmel wrote that the family had faced the operation with optimism and fear, and said Billy came through it with a new valve.
Kimmel thanked his wife, Molly McNearney, and the team at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles (CHLA). On his May 30 show, he said the family arrived at the hospital Thursday morning and returned home Monday. He also told a lighthearted story about a hawk flying into the family’s kitchen after they got home; that anecdote was not a medical update.
Why did Billy need heart surgery?
ABC News reported that Billy has Tetralogy of Fallot, a congenital heart condition that affects blood flow through the heart and the delivery of oxygen. Surgeon Vaughn A. Starnes described Billy’s case as severe in an interview published June 3, 2024. Starnes said Billy appeared well after birth until a nurse noticed he was blue.

What Kimmel said about the experience
Kimmel’s May 2024 message focused on Billy’s surgery and recovery. It was not a new announcement about health-care policy. In 2017, after Billy’s first surgery, Kimmel had spoken publicly about the cost of care, saying: “No parent should ever have to decide if they can afford to save their child’s life.” That earlier advocacy is separate from the 2024 update.
