In an interview reproduced by NewsATW and attributed there to The Verge, Park discusses the film’s long development, its source novel, AI and his own career fears.
What is No Other Choice about?
The film adapts Donald Westlake’s novel The Ax. Its central character, Man-su, played by Lee Byung-hun, loses his job at a paper company and concludes that removing other qualified candidates could give him a better chance of being hired. The result is a dark comedy about work, economic insecurity and the imagined extremes of trying to protect a family’s way of life.
Park describes the film’s opening image as Man-su at a family barbecue, presenting the ideal domestic life of a proud patriarch. The contradiction at the story’s center is that Man-su tries to defend that life through acts that endanger it. That tension reflects Park’s stated intention for the film, rather than a neutral verdict on Man-su’s choices.
What question does Park want viewers to ask?
Park says he wanted viewers to imagine how difficult it could be for people who had reached the middle class through their own efforts to accept losing that position. He points to a child who needs private cello lessons as one example of the family needs that can make the stakes feel immediate. His aim, he says, is to make room for the question “what if,” rather than simply invite viewers to condemn Man-su.

“I wanted to create a space in which people might ask themselves that question,” Park says in the reproduced interview. The point is not that economic pressure excuses violence; it is that the film asks viewers to consider the fears and expectations surrounding Man-su’s choices.
Why did the film take 16 years to reach the screen?
Park says he secured the rights to The Ax and began actively pursuing the project in 2010. Because Westlake’s novel is set in the United States, Park initially thought an American adaptation would be the most natural route. He recalls approaching French investors through producer Michèle Ray-Gavras and receiving offers and notes that did not meet his expectations.

Development also involved doubts about whether audiences would believe that a person could turn to murder after losing a job. Park says some studio readers questioned that premise, while reactions to the film’s humor varied. Those are accounts of particular development conversations, not evidence of a general audience consensus.
How Park found the novel
Park connects his discovery of Westlake’s book to his admiration for John Boorman’s Point Blank and its star, Lee Marvin. He says access to Point Blank in Korea had been difficult for a long time, and that only a limited number of Westlake novels had been translated there; he had read a few. For readers curious about the adaptation’s source, the book is The Ax by Donald E. Westlake. The interview does not identify a particular edition or its current availability.

Why does AI enter the story?
Park says the project’s long development gave him a chance to include AI as an employment issue. In his interpretation, Man-su first removes human rivals to improve his employment prospects, only to face a more formidable competitor at work: AI. Park connects that threat to the possibility that Man-su could lose his job again, making his violence futile. This is Park’s account of the film’s thematic design and ending.
Does Park oppose AI in filmmaking?
Not categorically. Park says he hopes he never uses AI tools in his own films, but he also recognizes that the technology could let young film students make movies at lower cost when they otherwise could not. “It would not be possible to tell them not to,” he says. His comments distinguish his personal preference from the potential access AI tools may offer others.

Has Park ever been fired?
Park says he has not personally been fired. He does describe persistent anxiety about losing work during film projects, especially when he holds to his creative position against a studio or producer. He also worries about whether future projects will find work and funding if a film performs poorly. “It stays with you from the initial planning stages of a movie,” he says of that fear.
He recalls the periods after his first two films failed commercially as especially difficult. While looking for producers for his scripts, he supported himself through film criticism. Park says it was painful to analyze films he wished he could make.

What advice does Park give young filmmakers?
Park’s advice is to develop a distinct voice, examine oneself honestly and tell stories that come from within rather than simply following what is popular. He frames this as his own view, not a rule that will suit every filmmaker: “In my opinion, spontaneity is the most important thing.”
What details did Park put into the film’s world?
Park discusses small props, including an oven mitt and a Christmas stocking, as part of creating a believable environment for the actors—not simply as Easter eggs for viewers. He also says a family photograph prepared for the set may not appear in the theatrical cut but would be in an extended cut he was preparing for Blu-ray.
