On September 29, 2025, Kimmel mocked Vance’s criticism of his talent and ratings during a monologue celebrating the return of Jimmy Kimmel Live! to Nexstar and Sinclair stations. Musk appears in separate coverage of a Kimmel segment about a 2026 Trump meeting on AI policy; the reviewed accounts do not establish a joint Kimmel response to Musk and Vance.
What Kimmel said to JD Vance
In a September 29, 2025 report, TheWrap described Kimmel’s opening Brooklyn-week monologue after his show returned to Nexstar and Sinclair stations. Kimmel called Vance “J-Dog” and jabbed at his criticism. TheWrap said Vance had characterized Kimmel as talentless and described the program’s ratings as “not very good” during an interview with Laura Ingraham; the report does not provide a direct verbatim Vance quote.
TheWrap quoted Kimmel saying: “I have some good news for you, J-Dog. We’re back on all the stations. Every home, every bar, every strip club and every prison in America. But, sorry, I didn’t mean to interrupt your bulls–t. Go on.” His punchline tied the ratings dispute to the show’s station availability.
Why station availability mattered to the exchange
TheWrap reported that Nexstar and Sinclair pre-emptions had ended on the Friday before Kimmel’s September 29 monologue. Kimmel told his audience the show was broadcasting to “100% of the country tonight.” That was his description of availability for that night, not a current or continuing coverage figure.

Where Elon Musk fits—and where he does not
The available accounts do not place Musk in the September 2025 Vance ratings exchange. A separate Guardian roundup dated October 1, 2026 described Kimmel discussing a meeting between Donald Trump and technology CEOs, including Musk and Mark Zuckerberg. In that segment Kimmel criticized Trump’s proposed approach to AI oversight and companies policing themselves.
The Guardian quoted Kimmel comparing that approach to the Terminator films: “Like remember how in the Terminator movies, the Terminators stopped when they asked him politely to stop terminating? That’s what he wants,” The coverage does not connect that AI-policy segment to Vance’s earlier ratings criticism, nor does it report a Musk response to Kimmel. The two episodes should therefore be treated as separate stories.

How the ratings figures differ
Ratings numbers in the coverage refer to different time periods and sources, so they are not interchangeable. TheWrap reported the audience for one return-night episode; ABC/Disney later published season and weekly figures using its stated measurement method.
| Figure | What it measures | Source and context |
|---|---|---|
| 6.3 million viewers | Audience for Kimmel’s September 23, 2025 return to late night; a single episode, not a seasonal average. | TheWrap, 2025. |
| 2 million total viewers | Jimmy Kimmel Live! average for the 2025–2026 season; ABC called it the show’s most-watched season since 2017–2018. | ABC/Disney, 2026. |
| 0.18 Adults 18–49 rating | Season average for the 2025–2026 season; ABC said it was the show’s strongest performance in the demographic in four years. | ABC/Disney, 2026. |
| 2.29 million total viewers; 0.21 Adults 18–49 rating | Figures for the week of September 21, 2026, measured as Live+Same Day Big Data Plus Panel Ratings. | ABC/Disney, September 29, 2026. |
The 6.3 million return-episode figure should not be compared directly with ABC’s later season average or premiere-week numbers as if they measured the same period. TheWrap’s return-night report and ABC’s later official figures describe distinct measurements.

What the headline can—and cannot—mean
The Vance ratings dig and Kimmel’s reply form one documented exchange in September 2025. Musk is associated with another Kimmel segment in October 2026, about AI policy and a Trump meeting with technology executives. The reviewed coverage does not verify that Kimmel hit back at Musk and Vance together, or that Musk personally responded to him.
