A report says Jimmy Kimmel plans a voluntary two-month break from Jimmy Kimmel Live!, but the claim that a former guest nearly got him fired for good is not established by the available reporting. The documented crisis was ABC’s September 2025 decision to preempt the show indefinitely after Kimmel’s comments about Charlie Kirk’s killing; Disney later announced the show would return.
What is reported about Kimmel’s time off?
An NBC Los Angeles search-result excerpt, apparently published around July 2026, says Kimmel announced a voluntary two-month break from Jimmy Kimmel Live! It also links the break to renewed calls from Donald and Melania Trump for ABC to fire him over a joke delivered days before the White House Correspondents’ Dinner. The article itself was not accessible for review, so those details should be treated as a report rather than independently confirmed facts: NBC Los Angeles.
What happened when ABC preempted the show in 2025?
On September 18, 2025, ABC reported that Jimmy Kimmel Live! had not aired the previous Wednesday after the network decided to preempt it “indefinitely.” The decision followed Kimmel’s remarks about Charlie Kirk’s death. ABC also reported that FCC Chairman Brendan Carr had called for Kimmel’s suspension before ABC announced its decision: ABC News.
On September 22, Disney said it had suspended production to avoid further inflaming a tense situation, describing some of Kimmel’s comments as “ill-timed” and “insensitive.” The company said that, after conversations with Kimmel, it had decided to return the show on Tuesday, September 23: ABC News.

What Kimmel said when he returned
In his September 23 return monologue, Kimmel said, “It was never my intention to make light of the murder of a young man.” He also said, “I don’t think the murderer who shot Charlie Kirk represents anyone,” and said he did not intend to blame a specific group. Kimmel acknowledged that some people had found his remarks unclear or ill-timed: ABC News.
Why some ABC viewers still did not see the show immediately
ABC’s decision to bring the program back was separate from the choices of individual station owners. ABC reported that Nexstar and Sinclair initially continued to preempt the show on their own ABC affiliate stations after the network reinstated it. That distinction matters: an affiliate’s decision not to carry a broadcast is not the same as ABC suspending production or canceling the program: ABC News.

Is a former guest known to have nearly got Kimmel fired for good?
No. The reporting available here does not identify the former guest, quote that person, or document a connection between a guest and a near-permanent firing. It would be misleading to name Charlie Kirk, Donald Trump, or anyone else as the former guest on this evidence. The September 2025 episode establishes a temporary preemption followed by a return—not that a former guest nearly caused Kimmel’s permanent removal.
