How the burial followed Rosalynn Carter’s
Rosalynn Carter was interred at the garden on November 28, 2023. Jimmy Carter died at home in Plains on December 29, 2024, aged 100, and was buried beside her a little over a year later. National Park Service, Carter Gardens; The Carter Center obituary announcement.
The burial site is in the garden at the couple’s former residence, not inside the house. The home is closed to the public. The memorial garden was designed by Rosalynn Carter and overlooks a pond the couple built together. Their simple granite headstones were modeled after those of President Richard Nixon and his wife, Pat. National Park Service, Carter Gardens.

Was the funeral open to the public?
No. The NPS said the funeral service and interment ceremony would be closed to public viewing. Members of the public could watch the procession as it passed through Plains on January 9, 2025; the NPS announcement gave an approximate procession start time of 4:45 p.m. That schedule and those arrangements applied to the funeral day, not to current park visits. Visitors can go to the garden, but not into the Carter residence. The NPS visitor page lists Carter Gardens at 1 Woodland Drive, Plains, Georgia, and daily hours of 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., with closures on Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s Day. Because hours and access can change, check the current NPS visitor page before making a trip.
