After a hospital stay, Jimmy Carter was determined to travel to Tennessee for a Habitat for Humanity build, according to an anecdote attributed to his pastor, the Rev. Tony Lowden. The detail is reported in a LiveNOW from FOX search-result extract; the exact date, hospital and circumstances are not established in the available account. Carter’s wider record of service—from public office and global humanitarian work to church teaching and hands-on help in his community—is documented by the Carter Center and Georgia Public Broadcasting.

What Tony Lowden said about Carter after the hospital stay

Lowden, Carter’s personal pastor, recalled that Carter had left the hospital and was set on going to Tennessee for a Habitat for Humanity build. The account appears in a LiveNOW from FOX search-result extract, rather than a fully accessible report, so it should be understood as an attributed anecdote—not a fully documented chronology. The extract does not establish when the hospital stay occurred, which hospital Carter was at, or whether he ultimately made that trip. LiveNOW from FOX

The story fits a larger pattern of practical service, but the broader record does not independently confirm the details of this particular hospital-to-Habitat episode.

Who was Tony Lowden?

Lowden was Carter’s personal pastor and pastor of Maranatha Baptist Church in Plains, Georgia, Carter’s home church. Georgia Public Broadcasting describes him as the first Black pastor of the church. Its episode Faithful Servant explores Lowden’s path to that role alongside Carter’s faith, his commitment to equal treatment and the Carters’ community work. Service that extended beyond the presidency

Carter’s public service took several forms. The Carter Center, which he and Rosalynn Carter co-founded in 1982, describes work on peace, human rights, democracy and health. Carter also continued teaching Sunday school at Maranatha for years after leaving the White House. The Carter Center biography and the Center’s tribute document that record.

In Plains, service could also mean ordinary, hands-on work. Georgia Public Broadcasting describes Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter building Habitat for Humanity homes and delivering food to neighbors. That community work helps explain why the reported determination to join a Habitat build resonates, even though the specific trip’s timing and outcome are not confirmed by the available extract. How the hospital story relates to Carter’s hospice decision

The anecdote should not be conflated with Carter’s later hospice announcement. On February 18, 2023, the Carter Center said that, following a series of short hospital stays, Carter had chosen to receive hospice care at home with his family rather than pursue additional medical intervention. The statement did not name the hospitals or disclose a diagnosis. It does not establish that those stays included the one described in Lowden’s Habitat anecdote. The Carter Center’s February 18, 2023 statement

In reporting republished by Morehouse School of Medicine, Lowden described Carter’s outlook this way: “This [Carter’s experience] has taught me a whole lot. It’s all up to the human spirit and their will. He still believes he has a lot to give to this nation.” The same article quoted Amy Tucci, president of the Hospice Foundation of America, explaining that hospice is intended to help people live as fully as possible, not simply to mark the end of life. Carter’s final years and legacy

Carter died at home in Plains on December 29, 2024, aged 100, according to the Carter Center biography, revised January 2, 2025. The Carter Center records a life that joined public leadership with sustained work beyond the presidency. The Nobel Peace Prize Committee cited his “decades of untiring effort to find peaceful solutions to international conflicts, to advance democracy and human rights, and to promote economic and social development” when it awarded him the 2002 prize. The Carter Center’s tribute

The hospital-to-Habitat account remains a small, attributed glimpse rather than a fully verified episode. Its meaning is clearest alongside the better-documented pattern: Carter repeatedly treated service as something to do, whether through international initiatives, a Sunday school lesson or work close to home.
