The Associated Press reported in 2013 that he said he was diagnosed in 2010 and treated with medication. The available reports do not establish that he has Graves’ disease or confirm his current clinical status.
What thyroid illness has Jet Li said he has?
Li identified his condition as hyperthyroidism. In December 2013, the Associated Press reported that he said he had been diagnosed in 2010, was taking medication, and that the condition had recently returned after being controlled. He also spoke about changes in his weight and uncertainty about how much longer he would continue working. These are Li’s reported statements at that time, not a current medical update. The Associated Press report.
What does hyperthyroidism mean?
Hyperthyroidism is an overactive thyroid: the thyroid gland makes more thyroid hormones than the body needs. These hormones affect how the body uses energy and influence many organs, including the heart. The Washington Post attributes this definition to the U.S. National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK). The Washington Post’s 2018 report.
Is Jet Li’s condition Graves’ disease?
The reports cited here do not identify the cause of Li’s hyperthyroidism. Graves’ disease is one possible cause of an overactive thyroid, but the available statements do not confirm that Li has it. It would be inaccurate to treat a specific cause as established.
