Parsons shared the memory in a Parade interview published August 19, 2022; it is his recollection of the moment, not an independently documented behind-the-scenes account.
What happened when Bob Newhart arrived on set
Parsons said Newhart appeared in the hallway before taping the first scene he did with the cast. The live audience’s standing ovation stopped the show. “He cried. I think we all cried,” Parsons recalled.

Parsons also described realizing that he had been holding back his feelings during rehearsals. He had been focused on doing the work while trying not to dwell on the fact that he was acting alongside Newhart. When the audience’s welcome brought the moment into focus, Parsons said, “the dam broke.” His account appeared in Parade’s August 19, 2022 article.
Who Bob Newhart played on The Big Bang Theory
Newhart played Professor Proton, a former children’s science-show host who had been a childhood inspiration to Sheldon Cooper and Leonard Hofstadter. The role earned Newhart his first Primetime Emmy, according to CBS News. He later voiced the character in Young Sheldon, as noted in Parade’s profile of his comedy career.

How the taping ovation differs from Newhart’s Emmy moment
Newhart also recalled becoming emotional at the 2013 Creative Arts Emmy ceremony, but that was a separate event. After he won, he turned to see the audience standing. In a CBS News interview, he said the response “emotionally destroyed me” because it came from his fellow performers. That ceremony account is distinct from Parsons’s story about the standing ovation on The Big Bang Theory set.
