Atlas drew sharply negative criticism, but Netflix’s own viewing figures show it was also a major audience draw. The available evidence supports debate about the film’s quality; it does not establish that it was a “new low” for Netflix.
What is Atlas about?
Atlas is a 2024 science-fiction action film starring Jennifer Lopez as Atlas Shepherd, a data analyst sent on a mission involving a renegade robot. When the mission goes wrong, she has to rely on the artificial intelligence she distrusts. Netflix’s film guide names Brad Peyton as director and Leo Sardarian and Aron Eli Coleite as writers. Netflix described the film as streaming when that guide was published on June 4, 2024; availability can vary by location and date.
In the guide, Lopez says of her character, “She doesn’t trust anybody and doesn’t want anything to do with AI.” Director Brad Peyton describes the story’s central idea as trust after trauma. Those comments explain the film’s premise, not its reception.
Why did critics react negatively?
One clear example is Benjamin Lee’s May 23, 2024, review for The Guardian, whose headline called the film a “silly Netflix mockbuster.” That is a negative critical response, but one review alone does not establish a consensus or make “new low” an objective verdict.

Metacritic’s Atlas page aggregates critic reviews, but its score and review count can change as the page is updated. Any precise aggregate should be reported with its snapshot date and number of reviews. A critic score is also only one measure of reception: it does not show how many people watched the film or whether Netflix considered it successful.
How many people watched Atlas?
Netflix reported that Atlas debuted at No. 1 on its English Films List for the week of May 20, 2024, with 28.2 million views. It was the most-watched title on that list that week and appeared in the Top 10 in 93 countries, according to Netflix’s May 28, 2024 weekly report. These are figures for that particular week, not an all-time ranking.

Netflix later reported 79.3 million views for Atlas in its Q2 2024 shareholder letter. The figure covers viewing from launch through July 14, 2024—not a full 91-day period. Netflix marks titles with shorter reporting windows with an asterisk and explains that their data runs from launch through July 14 in its Q2 2024 letter.
What does Netflix mean by a “view”?
Netflix calculates views by dividing total hours viewed by a title’s runtime. As a result, the figure is a standardized measure based on watch time, not a count of unique people who pressed play. Netflix explains the calculation and its reporting approach in its engagement-report methodology.

Netflix also says viewing hours alone do not determine whether a title is successful: audience response and the title’s economics matter too. The reported view totals therefore demonstrate reach, but they do not by themselves prove that viewers liked the film, that it was profitable, or that it was a high or low point for the service.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Does the evidence justify calling it a new low?
Not as a factual conclusion. “New low” needs a defined comparison: for example, the lowest critic scores among Netflix feature films, the weakest audience ratings, or the poorest performance relative to cost. The available sources establish a negative Guardian review and substantial Netflix-reported viewing, but they do not establish Atlas’s production budget or profitability. Without a defined comparison and reliable economics data, the phrase works as an opinion, not a demonstrated ranking.

The apparent contradiction is easy to resolve: a movie can be criticized harshly and still attract a large audience. The figures answer how much Netflix viewing the film generated during specified periods; they do not settle whether it was good, whether “everyone” disliked it, or whether it was a failure.
