Jay Leno said he made a mistake by letting Jimmy Kimmel’s 2010 jokes about the Conan O’Brien–NBC dispute air on Leno’s program without editing them. In a 2025 interview, Leno said he left the remarks in because they had happened and were real. His comments were a retrospective account, not a new confrontation.
What Leno said about Kimmel’s appearance
Looking back on the segment in an interview with Graham Bensinger, Leno said he had allowed Kimmel’s remarks to air unedited. The Boston Globe reported Leno’s explanation: “When Kimmel came on my show and humiliated me on my own show, I let it happen. I didn’t edit it. It was my mistake, I trusted somebody.” He added that he could have had the segment removed.
Asked why he left it in, Leno said: “Well, because it happened. It’s real, it happened. It’s my mistake. That’s how you learn, you know?” He also described the incident as the start of “a whole thing that continues to this day, really,” while acknowledging that Kimmel was a comedian. The Boston Globe’s May 9, 2025 report recounts the interview; Bensinger’s full interview is available on YouTube.
What Kimmel’s joke was about
Kimmel appeared by satellite on Leno’s program in January 2010, amid a dispute over NBC’s late-night schedule. When Leno asked him for his best prank, Kimmel joked that he had promised a man his show, given it to him five years later, and then taken it back almost immediately. The punchline referred to Leno’s handoff of The Tonight Show to Conan O’Brien and the conflict that followed. CBS News, reporting for the Associated Press at the time, covered the appearance and the scheduling dispute.

O’Brien took over The Tonight Show in 2009 after Leno’s 17-year run. NBC later sought to move O’Brien’s program to a later time slot and return Leno to the earlier one. Kimmel’s joke drew on that reversal; it was not a separate dispute about a show Kimmel himself had been promised.
Why Leno called it a mistake
Leno’s stated mistake was allowing the jokes to remain in the broadcast, not saying that he regretted the entire handoff of The Tonight Show to O’Brien. He said he had trusted someone and accepted that he should pay the price for the decision. His explanation was that the segment reflected what had actually happened, so he did not edit it out.

Leno’s 2025 reflection looks back at a specific television segment from 2010. It does not, on its own, establish the state of his private relationship with Kimmel. In September 2025, after ABC temporarily took Kimmel’s program off the air, Leno publicly said he was on Kimmel’s side, according to TV Insider.
