In a 2017 interview with Rolling Stone, Joe Walsh looked back on the costs of success, described how sobriety changed his response to anger, and reflected on family, aging and the Eagles’ return after Glenn Frey’s death. His comments about the band’s future and Donald Trump belong to that moment—not to a current update.
Andy Greene’s interview was published by Rolling Stone on July 30, 2017, under the title “The Last Word: Joe Walsh on the Future of the Eagles, Trump and Turning 70.” The full Q&A is available as a reproduction at Classic Rock Review; Christianity Today also identifies the interview, author and date while reproducing an excerpt. The reflections below are Walsh’s own recollections and opinions in that interview.
What did Joe Walsh say was the best and worst part of success?
Walsh described success as giving him practical freedom: once he no longer had to focus on basic survival or hold a full-time job, he could devote himself to making music. But the money and party lifestyle that came with fame also pulled his attention away from the craft. He said he began to inhabit the “crazy rock star” image associated with “Life’s Been Good.”
“The worst part of success is that a lot of things come along with it that you didn’t really know you were gonna get in the package.”

Asked about approaching 70, Walsh said he was not happy about it and joked that he was looking for a “69 For Dummies” book. He mentioned a brother-in-law nearing 75 and B.B. King performing at 90 as anecdotes that shaped his thoughts about age. They were conversational examples, not evidence for a general claim about aging or performing later in life.
